Yes—ancient Mars had environments that could have supported microbial life, but no evidence has confirmed that life existed there. The strongest recent clue is a rock collected by NASA’s Perseverance rover with mineral, chemical and textural features described as potential biosignatures. That means they merit further testing, not that they are proof of organisms. To reach a stronger conclusion, scientists must establish the rock’s history, test non-biological explanations and look for independent lines of evidence.
Could Mars have supported life?
Some ancient Martian environments appear to have had conditions that could support life as we know it: liquid water, relevant chemical ingredients and possible sources of energy. NASA has summarized evidence for ancient rivers, lakes and deltas. Perseverance’s destination, Jezero Crater, was chosen in part because it preserves an ancient lake and delta setting where traces of microbial life, if present, might have been preserved.
That is a conclusion about habitability, not about inhabitants. A place can have conditions suitable for life without life ever arising there. The evidence makes ancient Mars a plausible place to investigate; it does not establish that organisms lived on the planet.
What evidence has the Mars rovers found?
Organic carbon in Gale Crater
In 2022, NASA reported that Curiosity measured 200–273 parts per million of total organic carbon in mudstone from an ancient lake deposit in Gale Crater. The sampled Yellowknife Bay mudstone is approximately 3.5 billion years old. Organic carbon is material that can contribute to prebiotic chemistry, but it can also come from non-biological sources. The measurement is an abundance of carbon, not a measure of the probability that life existed.

Curiosity has also found an unusual carbon-isotope signature in drilled rocks. NASA’s 2022 account included a caution from Paul Mahaffy, then the former principal investigator of Curiosity’s Sample Analysis at Mars laboratory: “We’re finding things on Mars that are tantalizingly interesting, but we would really need more evidence to say we’ve identified life.” The isotope result is a clue to investigate, not a life detection.
Potential biosignatures at Cheyava Falls
In July 2024, Perseverance collected the Sapphire Canyon core from the Cheyava Falls rock in Jezero Crater’s Bright Angel formation, an ancient river-valley setting. NASA describes Neretva Vallis, the associated ancient valley, as approximately 400 meters wide. A peer-reviewed Nature paper published September 10, 2025, reported organic-bearing mudstone and distinctive mineral and textural associations in the rock.

The paper says these combined observations warrant consideration as potential biosignatures. NASA’s September 2025 explainer defines a potential biosignature as “A potential biosignature is a substance or structure that might have a biological origin but requires more data or further study before a conclusion can be reached about the absence or presence of life.” The distinction matters: neither NASA nor the Nature paper presents the Sapphire Canyon features as a confirmed fossil or proof that life was present.
What evidence should researchers look for?
No single molecule, mineral or image can settle the question by itself. Researchers need several observations that fit together, while also testing whether non-biological processes could produce the same pattern.

Jezero’s sedimentary record makes it a useful place to search for preserved traces, but a promising setting is not itself evidence of life. NASA’s September 2026 report on Jezero’s Margin Unit describes multiple aqueous systems and rocks with differing histories. That geological complexity matters because scientists must reconstruct how each rock formed and changed rather than assume every nearby deposit shares one simple lake history.
How can scientists distinguish life from non-biological chemistry?
Carbon compounds, minerals and unusual textures can each form without organisms. A potential signal becomes more persuasive only when its setting and preservation history are understood and when competing non-biological explanations have been tested. For the Bright Angel findings, the mineral, chemical, organic and textural observations form a combined case for investigation; none is decisive on its own.

That is why Curiosity’s organic-carbon measurement and isotope result remain useful examples, not proof: they show that Mars preserves chemically interesting clues, while leaving open how those clues formed. Likewise, a rock’s formation in a watery environment raises its astrobiological interest but cannot show that life took advantage of the conditions.

Rover instruments can examine Martian rocks in place, but detailed laboratory analysis can make more precise measurements and test more possible explanations. The Nature paper’s authors say that returning samples to Earth would provide the best opportunity to understand the processes behind the Bright Angel features. Their statement is about the value of further analysis, not a promise that sample study will prove biology.

The strongest case for past Martian life would therefore require converging evidence: a credible habitable setting, features that survived in a way consistent with preservation, chemical and textural patterns that resist plausible non-biological explanations, and independent tests that reinforce the interpretation. Until those standards are met, the accurate conclusion is that Mars may once have been habitable and that Perseverance has found a potential biosignature—not that life has been detected.
