A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11To move an existing WSL distribution on the same PC, export it as a VHD, unregister the old distribution, then import the VHD in place from its new location. Do not unregister the old copy until the export has finished and you have confirmed the VHD file exists at the destination: unregistering permanently deletes that distribution’s data, settings, and installed software.
This is the approach Microsoft gives for the question, “How can I move my WSL distribution to a different drive or location?” in its WSL FAQ.
Move the distribution with a VHD export
Run these commands in PowerShell, replacing Ubuntu with the distribution’s registered name and the example path with a destination on the drive where you want it stored. The destination directory must exist before you export.
wsl --export Ubuntu D:WSLDistrosUbuntuext4.vhdx --format vhd
wsl --unregister Ubuntu
wsl --import-in-place Ubuntu D:WSLDistrosUbuntuext4.vhdx
- Export the distribution. The first command creates a VHDX at the destination path. Wait for it to complete, then confirm that the file is present and has a plausible size before proceeding.
- Unregister the old distribution. Only do this after verifying the export. Microsoft warns that unregistering permanently removes all data, settings, and software associated with that distribution.
- Import the VHDX in place. The last command registers the disk as a distribution under the supplied name without extracting it to a separate install directory.
Keep the exported VHDX until you have started the imported distribution and checked that its files and expected setup are available. If the export fails or the file is missing, stop: do not unregister the original.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the right export and import format
WSL supports two relevant paths. A VHD export is used for the documented in-place relocation; a tar archive can instead be imported into an explicit installation directory.
| Path | Export and import commands | Format and applicability |
|---|---|---|
| VHD in place | wsl --export <Name> <FileName> --format vhd, then wsl --import-in-place <Name> <FileName> |
VHDX; Microsoft documents VHD export/import for WSL 2 only. The virtual disk used with --import-in-place must use the ext4 filesystem. |
| Tar to an install directory | wsl --export <Name> <FileName>, then wsl --import <Name> <InstallLocation> <FileName> |
Export defaults to tar format. Import extracts the archive to the specified installation location. |
These command behaviors and format requirements are documented in Microsoft’s basic WSL commands reference (last updated December 1, 2025). Microsoft says the export/import commands are available in Windows version 1809 and later; check wsl --version and confirm the distribution is running under WSL 2 before relying on VHD options.

Use tar import when you want an explicit install directory
If you choose the tar route, export the distribution to an archive and import it by providing the target install directory:
wsl --export Ubuntu D:WSLDistrosUbuntuubuntu.tar
wsl --import Ubuntu D:WSLDistrosUbuntu D:WSLDistrosUbuntuubuntu.tar
The export command without a format option defaults to tar. Unlike --import-in-place, --import takes an installation location and archive path. This is a documented way to import a tar archive at a chosen location; it is not the same command sequence as Microsoft’s FAQ’s VHD relocation method. See the command reference for the syntax and options.

Understand what this move does—and does not—change
It relocates the registered distro, not Windows drive mounts
Moving the WSL distribution changes where its virtual disk or installation is stored. It is different from changing where Windows drives appear inside Linux. WSL mounts fixed Windows drives under /mnt by default—for example, the Windows C: drive appears at /mnt/c/. That mount-path behavior is configurable, but changing it does not move the registered distribution. Microsoft explains the distinction in its advanced WSL configuration reference.
It is not the same as choosing a location during installation
The --location option for wsl --install specifies where a newly installed distribution goes. It is not Microsoft’s documented relocation command for a distribution that is already installed; use an export/import workflow for that case.

When a full VHD transfer is impractical
A full distribution export can require considerable disk space. If you are transferring work to another machine with limited space or rebuilding rather than preserving the full environment, Microsoft describes exporting selected directories in tar archives and saving an apt package list to reinstall packages. Those techniques transfer files or help recreate software; they should not be treated as preserving every aspect of the original distribution. The options are described in Microsoft’s WSL FAQ.
