Should a Zelda fan get Switch 2 or PS5?
For someone whose must-play list includes current Zelda games, Switch 2 is the clear fit. Nintendo’s Switch 2 games page lists Zelda software for the system, including updated editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The PlayStation sources cited here cover PS5 games and PS4 compatibility, but do not establish access to current Zelda releases.
PS5 can be the better choice if Zelda is only a minor interest and you want PlayStation titles or to keep playing most of your PS4 collection. The decision is less about a universal winner than which library you expect to use.
What changes when you buy Switch 2 instead of the original Switch?
Switch 2 is Nintendo’s current system, but the original Switch remains relevant if you already own games for it. Nintendo says Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Switch games, while warning that certain titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 backward compatibility information for the specific game you own.

Compatibility does not mean every Switch game becomes its Switch 2 edition. Nintendo explains that inserting the Switch version of Breath of the Wild into an original Switch plays the Switch version, without features exclusive to the Switch 2 edition. Which Switch 2 Zelda edition should you choose?
If you already own a compatible Switch copy, check whether the Switch 2 edition’s additional features matter to you before buying another version. Nintendo distinguishes the original Switch game from its Switch 2 edition; the original version does not gain the edition’s exclusive features just because it is played on a Switch 2.

For a new purchase, verify the exact game edition, format, and local availability before checkout. An original Switch edition and a Switch 2 edition are not interchangeable descriptions of the same feature set.
What about Ocarina of Time on Switch 2?
On September 9, 2026, Nintendo Australia announced The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Switch 2, with a November 5, 2026 launch date. When does PS5 make more sense?
PS5 is worth prioritizing if your existing PS4 games and interest in PlayStation’s own catalog are more important to you than current Zelda access. PlayStation says PS5 supports the overwhelming majority of PS4 games; select games benefit from Game Boost. Its product and games pages present different totals for compatible PS4 games, so a single count is not a reliable headline. Check a specific game’s compatibility before relying on it.
Also account for the physical format of games you own. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot use PS4 discs, and a disc-based PS4 upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive. If your library is mostly physical, confirm the console model before purchasing.

Make the choice around what you will play
- Choose Switch 2 if playing Zelda is central to your plans or you want Nintendo’s listed Zelda games and editions.
- Choose PS5 if PlayStation games and most of your PS4 library are the priority, and Zelda is not essential.
- Before buying either console, compare the exact model, local bundle, game editions, and physical or digital format against the games you plan to play. Current prices and bundles are not established here.
