If an Android app starts crashing, won’t open, or won’t respond after an update, restart your phone and check for Android and app updates first. Then troubleshoot the affected app with a force stop and cache clear. The timing alone does not prove the Android update caused the problem: the right next step depends on whether one app or the whole phone is affected, and on the app’s compatibility with your device.
Start with the safest fixes
Google’s guidance recommends restarting first, then checking for system and app updates. Settings names vary by phone, so use the closest equivalent on your device. Restart after each step to check whether it resolved the problem.
- Restart your phone. Use the power menu, restart, and test the app again.
- Check for an Android update. Open your phone’s Settings and look for System update or Software update. Install an update if one is available, following your manufacturer’s prompts.
- Update the app. Open the Google Play Store, find the affected app, and tap Update if offered. If no update is available, continue to the app-level steps.
Google’s installed-app troubleshooting guide notes that some steps apply only to Android 8.1 and newer; menu labels and paths can differ by device.
Fix an app that crashes, won’t open, or won’t respond
Force-stop the app
Open Settings, find Apps or Apps & notifications, select the affected app, and choose Force stop. The exact path varies by manufacturer. Open the app again and see whether it works.

Clear the app’s cache
In the app’s information page in Settings, open Storage or Storage & cache and choose Clear cache. This removes temporary files, rather than intentionally deleting the app’s saved information. Test the app again.
Clear app data only after checking its backup
If the app still fails, Google suggests clearing its data. The option may be called Clear storage or Clear data. This can erase information saved in the app, so first check whether the app syncs your information or has a backup you can restore. Proceed only if you understand what may be lost.

Check the phone’s date and time
Google also recommends syncing the device’s date and time. In Settings, find Date & time and enable the automatic date/time and time-zone options if available, then test the app.
Reinstall only if your data is protected
Uninstalling an app can erase data saved in it. Before removing it, confirm that important information is backed up or synchronized. If you proceed, reinstall the app from Google Play and test it; reinstalling may help, but it is not guaranteed to fix the problem.

Decide whether this is an app problem or a compatibility problem
An installed app that has stopped working is different from an app that Google Play says is unavailable or unsupported on your device. Google Play says compatibility can depend on factors such as Android version, screen size, location, and other device-targeting choices, and it can change over time.
- The app is installed but failing: follow the troubleshooting steps above.
- The app cannot be found or installed: check its Google Play listing on that device. Google explains how app compatibility with Android devices works; contact the developer for details about a specific app.
Google Play’s target API-level rules are requirements for app developers and can affect whether some older apps are available to new users on newer Android devices. They are not a user-side diagnosis or fix for an app already installed and crashing.

Check whether the phone itself is unstable
Look at available storage
Google says an Android phone may start having problems when less than 10% of its storage is free. Check Settings for Storage and free space if you are near that level. This is a general device-health indicator, not proof that low storage caused a particular app crash.
Use safe mode to isolate downloaded apps
If the phone is restarting or crashing broadly—not just one app—safe mode can temporarily turn off downloaded apps and help narrow down the cause. The steps for entering safe mode differ by manufacturer, so follow your phone maker’s instructions. If the problem disappears in safe mode, restart normally and remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, checking the phone after each removal. Know when to contact support
If only one app is affected and other apps work, Google’s guidance is direct: “If you have trouble with one app but can use other apps without a problem, contact the app developer.” Use the developer’s contact details on the app’s Google Play listing. If the phone itself remains unstable, consult your manufacturer’s support instructions.
Do not treat clearing Google Play services data as an early general fix for one crashing app. Google Play services is separate from the Play Store and connects apps with Google services; Google warns that clearing its storage can remove information such as passwords and payment-related cards and advises trying other troubleshooting options first. See Google’s guidance on Google Play services. A factory reset is also not a routine early step: it removes all data, and Google recommends backing up first.
