Then try one reversible, game-specific change at a time; no compatibility setting or tool is a universal fix.
Start by identifying the problem
Before changing settings, note the game’s title and edition, where you obtained it, your Windows version, and the exact symptom. Record your CPU and graphics hardware if you know them, check the game’s stated system requirements, and preserve its save files. A launch failure, slow gameplay, fullscreen trouble, and rendering artifacts can have different causes; Intel lists these symptoms among issues seen with some older titles on Windows 10 (Intel Support).
Change one setting at a time and retest. That makes it easier to tell what helped and to undo a change that made things worse. There is no universal benchmark or performance gain established for older games as a group.
Check for an official fix first
Look for an update or compatibility note from the game’s publisher or the storefront where you got the game. Microsoft explains that apps can become incompatible with newer Windows versions because of changes to operating-system architecture, security features, or system requirements. If the publisher has no update, Microsoft recommends trying the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter (Microsoft Support: Make older apps or programs compatible with the latest version of Windows).

Try Windows compatibility settings as experiments
On Windows, compatibility options can help some older programs behave more like they did on an earlier system. Intel’s guidance is specifically for Windows 10 with Intel HD/UHD graphics, so treat its suggestions as tests—not instructions that apply to every PC or game. The options it describes include running as administrator, selecting a compatibility mode, reduced color, a 640×480 screen resolution, and disabling high-DPI display scaling (Intel Support).

- Right-click the game’s shortcut or executable and open Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab and test one relevant option, such as a compatibility mode. If the game cannot write settings or save data where expected, test Run this program as an administrator separately.
- Launch the game and check the original symptom. If it worsens or does not improve, undo that option before testing another.
Reduced color, 640×480, and high-DPI scaling settings are display-related experiments, not general ways to increase speed. Test them only when the game’s colors, resolution, or scaling are the problem.
Match the tool to the game’s era and fault

For DOS games, use an emulator designed for DOS
DOSBox is not simply a Windows compatibility checkbox: it emulates an x86 PC with sound, graphics, mouse, and joystick support to run many DOS games. Consult the project’s setup guide for installation and configuration. Its central purpose is DOS-game emulation, not providing broad networking or printer support (DOSBox project wiki).

For graphics wrappers, follow the exact game’s instructions
Some Windows-era games depend on older graphics interfaces or behaviors that do not work well on a modern system. A wrapper may translate or handle a particular graphics path, but adding one without a matching game-specific reason can create new problems. Follow instructions for the precise game and version, keep a copy of any files you replace, and reverse the change if the result is worse. For Windows 11 windowed games, check the feature’s limits
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization is intended for compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games running windowed or borderless—not every older game, fullscreen setup, or graphics problem. If you try it and the display gets worse, turn it off for that game and restart it (Microsoft Support).

Check for missing legacy components carefully
Some older games expect software libraries that Windows no longer installs automatically. Intel gives DirectX 9 or earlier as an example in its Windows 10 and Intel HD/UHD graphics guidance, last reviewed on 2024-05-08. That example is not proof that every launch failure is caused by DirectX. If an error identifies a missing runtime or component, confirm the game’s requirement and use a trustworthy official publisher or Microsoft source where available (Intel Support).
Also distinguish a 32-bit Windows game from a 16-bit application. Intel’s guidance notes that 16-bit applications are not supported on 64-bit Windows in the environment it describes. A compatibility-mode toggle should not be assumed to make unsupported 16-bit code run.

If the game still runs slowly or will not launch
When general steps do not resolve the problem, gather details before trying more invasive changes. The exact remedy may depend on whether the issue is DRM, a missing runtime, unsupported 16-bit code, an obsolete graphics API, or game logic tied to frame rate.
- Exact game name, edition, and version, plus where it was obtained.
- Windows version and build, graphics hardware, and any available CPU or GPU details.
- The precise symptom and error message, if one appears.
- Any setting or file change you tested and whether it changed the behavior.
Use those details to find instructions for that title and version. Without a specific game and system, there is no reliable way to prescribe a particular wrapper, runtime, or compatibility setting.
