Yes—both new Outlook for Windows and classic Outlook for Windows can send ordinary file attachments. The differences are in where you can select files from, which Outlook-specific items you can attach, and how you handle received files. Microsoft’s feature comparison, last updated September 23, 2026, lists network-share file access as available in classic Outlook but unsupported in new Outlook; Microsoft also says its new Outlook attachment workflow does not support attaching calendar information.

How attachment support differs

Task New Outlook for Windows Classic Outlook for Windows
Attach an ordinary file Use Attach File on the Message tab. Recently used files may be suggested; where offered, choose a traditional attachment or a OneDrive link. Use Attach File in the Include group on the Message tab. Recent items and the Attach Item option are also documented.
Attach from a network share Not supported, according to Microsoft’s feature comparison. Available, according to Microsoft’s feature comparison.
Attach a Business Card or Outlook item No equivalent option is described on Microsoft’s new Outlook attachment help page. Use Attach Item to choose a Business Card or Outlook item.
Attach calendar information Microsoft says this is not supported in the new Outlook attachment workflow. It suggests calendar sharing or a scheduling poll instead. Classic Outlook supports attaching Outlook items; the cited help does not establish every calendar-attachment case.

These are documented workflows, not proof that every alternative for sharing the same information is unavailable. Microsoft’s feature comparison applies to Outlook for Microsoft 365; availability can also depend on account type, subscription, and organization settings.

Attach a file or share a link

In either client, choose the file-attachment command when the recipient should receive a copy in the message. New Outlook can also offer a OneDrive link. A link can be more practical for large files or collaborative work, but the recipient needs permission to access the cloud file. In classic Outlook, Microsoft documents a warning when recipients may not have access to a SharePoint file, along with an “Attach as copy” option.

A link and an attachment are not interchangeable: a link points to a cloud file whose access depends on permissions, while an attachment sends a copy. Choose based on whether recipients need a separate copy or access to the shared original.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Preview, save, and edit files you receive

Preview is not the same as editing, and neither client can preview every format. Microsoft documents previews for common Office files, attached Outlook items, images, and text files, subject to the file type, installed application or previewer, and configuration.

New Outlook

  • Preview supported attachments, then download them or save them to OneDrive.
  • Use Download all when you need the message’s attachments locally.
  • Office files can be edited in a browser or an Office app. Download unsupported file types and open them in an appropriate application.

Classic Outlook

  • Use Save As or Save All Attachments; Microsoft’s guidance gives Documents as the default save folder. Drag-and-drop is also documented.
  • Previewer controls are available in Trust Center. Additional installed previewers may support other file types.
  • Office files can be edited in a browser or desktop Office app. Download unsupported types to edit them in a suitable application.

For a linked cloud file, edits may affect the shared file rather than an independent copy; for a downloaded attachment, you are editing the copy you saved. Check which one you opened before expecting changes to appear for other people. Microsoft’s attachment guidance documents the available actions.

Why Outlook may not let you attach or send a file

The file is on a network share

If the file lives on a network location, the documented version difference matters: Microsoft lists network-share access as available in classic Outlook and unsupported in new Outlook. Use a supported local or cloud location, or classic Outlook if your organization permits it.

The file type is blocked

Microsoft says Outlook blocks file types that may spread computer viruses, including some executable and script formats. Its blocked-attachments guidance recommends safer sharing approaches such as a cloud link or compression; zipping does not guarantee delivery because server and recipient protections can still apply. Do not open unexpected files or treat renaming an extension or compressing a suspicious file as making it safe. Follow workplace policy, and ask your administrator about approved sharing options.

The message exceeds an account or server limit

Microsoft’s guidance gives a 20 MB email-size limit for internet email accounts such as Outlook.com or Gmail, and a 10 MB default for Exchange business accounts. Each figure includes the message and its attachments; actual limits may differ with account and server settings. Microsoft recommends a file-sharing service or compression for oversized messages. New Outlook can use a cloud link, compression, or a SharePoint library in a business setting. Classic Outlook also supports cloud links and compression, and documents automatic resizing for image files. Resizing an inserted image in new Outlook changes its displayed size, not the underlying file size. See Microsoft’s guidance on large attachments.

The message uses Rich Text Format

In classic Outlook, attachments can appear in the message body when the message is in Rich Text Format (RTF); Microsoft says plain-text attachments appear below the subject. Shared links are preserved as links in HTML-formatted mail, but in Rich Text or plain text they may be added as a copy. If an attachment or link appears differently than expected, check the message format before changing the file.

Which Outlook should you use?

  • Choose either client for everyday file attachments when the file is in a supported location and within your account’s message-size limit.
  • Use classic Outlook for a documented Attach Item workflow when you need to attach a Business Card or Outlook item, or to select files from a network share.
  • Use a sanctioned cloud link when a file is too large or a file type is blocked, while checking recipient permissions and organizational rules.
  • Download the file to edit it if its format cannot be edited in the browser or an Office app.

Microsoft’s new and classic Outlook feature comparison was last updated September 23, 2026. The comparison here is specifically for Outlook for Windows; do not assume every difference applies to Outlook on the web, Mac, mobile, or every account and tenant.
