Usually, you cannot play a physical game disc on a digital-only console using a generic external USB drive. There are two specific paths: Sony’s detachable drive works with certain PS5 Digital Edition slim models, and Xbox has announced a digital entitlement for eligible Xbox One and Series X discs that must first be claimed on a disc-equipped console. Otherwise, you’ll need a digital license or a console with a built-in disc drive. Start by checking your exact console model.
Can you play disc games on a digital-only console?
Only if the console supports a manufacturer-approved drive or the platform offers a valid digital entitlement for that game. A physical disc is not automatically a digital license: the console must be able to read the disc, or the publisher and platform must provide another supported way to access the game.
Do not assume an ordinary external USB optical drive will work. The platform documentation cited here does not establish generic USB drives as a way to read console game discs. Use only a drive the console maker explicitly lists as compatible.
Can you add a disc drive to PS5 Digital Edition?
Yes, but only for specified slim-model groups. Sony lists its separately sold detachable disc drive as compatible with PS5 Digital Edition models CFI-2000 and CFI-2100. The name “PS5 Digital Edition” alone is not enough to confirm compatibility: check the model code on your console before buying. Sony says the drive supports disc-based games, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD. Pairing the drive during setup requires an internet connection. The CFI-21XX PS5 instruction manual explains attachment and handling, and specifies that the separately sold drive is for consoles without a drive installed.
Can you use an external disc drive with Xbox Series S?
No. Microsoft describes Xbox Series S as all-digital and says disc-based games are not supported. A generic USB optical drive does not turn it into a disc-reading console. Microsoft contrasts it with Xbox Series X, which includes a UHD Blu-ray Disc player. Microsoft’s Xbox Series S product page

Can you convert an Xbox disc game to digital?
Xbox announced a disc-to-digital entitlement route for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games. To claim a digital entitlement, insert the supported disc into an Xbox One or Series X and launch the game. That means a Series S owner who has only the disc cannot claim the entitlement using the Series S alone; access to a disc-equipped console is needed for the claim. Xbox Wire’s August 26, 2026 announcement says the initial catalog includes thousands of titles, but does not name every eligible game or publish a precise count. It notes that not every title is included.
Check Xbox’s current guidance for your specific game before relying on this option. The announcement also says Play Anywhere and Cloud Gaming benefits apply where supported; those benefits are not guaranteed for every title.

Check whether you already own a digital license
If you previously bought a game digitally through PlayStation Store, Sony says PS4 purchases appear in your library after you sign in to the purchasing account. Compatible digital PS4 games can be played on PS5. A digital purchase is separate from owning the physical disc, so check the correct account’s library rather than assuming disc ownership supplies a license. Do not confuse a disc-based upgrade offer with a digital purchase. Sony says a PS4 Blu-ray disc cannot be used to redeem a PS5 upgrade on a PS5 Digital Edition, because that console cannot read the disc. Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade support page

The drive accessory only addresses compatible PS5 models; an Xbox entitlement applies only to supported titles; and a digital purchase covers only the games licensed to that account. If you want to keep using a broader physical collection, disc-equipped hardware is the more direct option. Sony and Microsoft product availability, model compatibility, and entitlement rules can change, so verify current local listings and terms before spending money.
