You can’t mark a Gmail sender, email address, or individual message as a Preferred Source in Google Search. The setting applies to websites and sources. To see more from a publication, add its website under Search personalization → Source preferences, or use the star beside Top stories when that section appears. If you received the publication’s newsletter, it may contain a link that lets you add the publication’s website—not the email sender.
What Preferred Sources changes
Google describes Preferred Sources as a way to tailor your experience in Top stories, AI Mode, and AI Overviews. Choosing a source can help you find more of its content when it is fresh and relevant to your search, but it does not limit results to that source or guarantee that it will appear for every query. Google said when it introduced the feature that results from other sites would still appear (Google’s launch explanation).
Google Search Help says sources that are not updated regularly may not be available to select. AI Mode and AI Overviews may also depend on whether those features are available in your location (Google Search Help; Google Search Central).
Add a website through Search settings
- Open Google Search or the Google app and select your profile picture or initial.
- Choose Search personalization, then Source preferences.
- Search for the publication or website and select its checkbox. It should appear in the Your sources area.
If you are signed in to your Google Account when you save the setting, Google says your preferences remain the same in each browser where you sign in (Google Search Help).

Add a source from Top stories on desktop
This route works only when Google shows a Top stories section for your search.
- Search for a significant recent event on Google.
- If Top stories appears, click the star-shaped control to the right of its heading.
- Search for the source and select its checkbox.
- Click Reload results.
To change your choices later, open the same control, select or clear sources, and reload results. The settings route is the alternative when Top stories does not appear for your query (Google Search Help).

If the preferred-source option came from an email newsletter
A publication can include a Google source-preferences link in its newsletter. Following the link can pre-fill the publication’s domain so you can select that website in Google. It does not mark the newsletter sender, add the sender to Gmail contacts, or create a Gmail filter. Google also documents an optional interactive button publishers can put on their websites; that is a publisher feature, not a setting readers apply to an email (Google Search Central’s publisher guide).

Google Search Central says Preferred Sources is available globally for Top stories in languages where Google Search is available; it may also appear in AI Mode and AI Overviews in places where those features are available (Google Search Central).

Google reported that users were twice as likely to click through to a site after marking it as a Preferred Source in announcements dated April 30 and May 27, 2026. Those are Google’s own reported results, not an independent study. Google also reported more than 600,000 unique sources selected in an August 20, 2026 announcement; that is a dated snapshot, not a live total (April 30 announcement; May 27 announcement; August 20 announcement).
