Should I get a disc or digital console?
Start with the games and movies you actually expect to use. A disc-drive console can accept compatible physical game discs; an all-digital console cannot play disc-based games. If UHD Blu-ray movie playback matters, check that the specific console has a compatible optical drive.
- Choose a disc-drive model if you own or plan to buy compatible physical games, or want to play UHD Blu-ray movies.
- Choose an all-digital model if digital purchases and downloads suit you and you have no need for game or movie discs.
Check compatibility for the specific title and console model rather than assuming every disc works across a console family.
Check the exact console model before comparing
“Xbox Series X” and “PS5” are family names, not enough detail to establish whether a particular configuration includes a drive. Manufacturer listings distinguish drive-equipped and all-digital versions, and accessory requirements can vary by SKU.

Microsoft’s product page lists Series X as capable of up to 120 FPS; this is a manufacturer specification subject to supported content and display, not a guarantee for every game. The 4K and 1440p descriptions above are also manufacturer positioning, not a comparison from independent testing.
Is the disc version worth it?
It is worth considering when the drive has a use for you: playing compatible discs or watching UHD Blu-ray movies. If you will use only digital games, the drive may not add practical value. Weigh that against the exact local price, not a presumed universal premium.

Convenience
Digital-only gaming avoids swapping discs. On Xbox Series S, Microsoft says you access your digital game library through the console and select a game to play. Purchases and downloads are handled through the platform’s digital library or store.

What you give up
An all-digital console cannot play disc-based games. That matters if your collection is physical or you want to use movie discs. Do not assume a future switch to digital will preserve access to your physical library.
Costs and ownership considerations
The available manufacturer information does not establish whether digital games are always cheaper, whether physical games retain resale value, or the applicable lending, sharing, and ownership policies. Those points depend on platform rules, retailer offers, and circumstances; do not treat either format as a guaranteed way to save money.

- Inventory your media: list the physical games and UHD Blu-ray movies you already own or plan to use.
- Confirm compatibility: check each important title or format against the specific console model.
- Identify the exact SKU: verify whether the listing includes a drive or is all-digital, and whether a separately sold drive is supported for that configuration.
- Compare the whole console: review storage and resolution specifications as well as disc support; Series X and Series S are not differentiated only by an optical drive.
