If you mean Sombra, her current kit no longer lets her Hack enemy heroes: Blizzard removed that ability in the October 6, 2026 retail update. Her Hotfix can still hack health packs and most enemy deployables, but damage interrupts that interaction. If you mean Roadhog, Chain Hook needs a clear line of sight from Roadhog to the target, and the target is released if it leaves his sightline during the pull.
Why can’t Sombra Hack an enemy hero?
Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 retail patch notes say Sombra moved from Damage to Support and that Hack was removed from her kit. The rework replaced the old ability-lockout mechanic with Weaken, which cuts the affected target’s damage and healing output by half. So if you are trying to Hack an enemy hero, there is no enemy-Hack cast to complete in the current kit described by those notes.
Some older guides—and Blizzard’s Sombra hero page—describe the previous enemy Hack, including its ability lockout and interruption by damage. That page reflects the older behavior; the newer, dated retail patch notes establish the current ability rules.
What Sombra can still hack
Sombra’s Hotfix can target health packs and most enemy deployables. This is separate from the removed enemy-hero Hack. The October 6 patch notes specify a separate six-second cooldown for the health-pack and deployable interaction. Damage interrupts the interaction; it can be used while stealthed, temporarily revealing Sombra without breaking stealth.

Why does Roadhog’s Chain Hook miss or let go?
Chain Hook has a line-of-sight requirement. Blizzard’s January 2017 retail patch notes say the initial sightline check is made from Roadhog’s position, not from the hook. They also state that a target already hooked is released if it leaves Roadhog’s line of sight before the pull finishes. In practical terms, the published rule does not allow Roadhog to hook or pull a target around a corner.
- At the moment you cast, check whether Roadhog has a direct sightline to the target.
- Check for a wall, corner, or other geometry that blocks the initial view or breaks sightline during the pull.
- Make sure Chain Hook is off cooldown. Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 notes list a six-second cooldown in 5v5 and a seven-second cooldown in 6v6.
The same patch notes list 0.3 seconds of stun after the pull and a final target distance of 4.5 meters from Roadhog. These values describe the current published ability; they do not explain every apparent miss or release in a particular match.

Quick checks by ability
| Ability or situation | Current rule | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Sombra trying to Hack an enemy hero | Enemy Hack was removed in Blizzard’s October 6, 2026 retail update. | Use her current kit rather than instructions for the older Hack. |
| Sombra using Hotfix on a health pack or deployable | Works on health packs and most enemy deployables; damage interrupts it. The interaction has a separate six-second cooldown. | Confirm the target is an eligible object, avoid taking damage during the interaction, and check its cooldown. |
| Roadhog attempting a hook | Initial line of sight is checked from Roadhog’s position; a target is released if it leaves his sightline before the pull completes. | Check the direct sightline and nearby geometry, including corners. |
| Roadhog’s Chain Hook cooldown | Six seconds in 5v5; seven seconds in 6v6, per the October 6, 2026 patch notes. | Account for the mode you are playing before attempting another hook. |
What these rules do not diagnose
The published ability descriptions explain Sombra’s current Hack options and Roadhog’s line-of-sight rule, but they do not identify the cause of a specific replay, server issue, input problem, or match-specific interaction. If the hook appeared to have a clear sightline and was ready, review the moment it was cast and whether sightline changed during the pull; the official rules alone cannot determine what happened in an individual match.
