If State of Decay 2 co-op will not connect, first check Xbox service status, enable Multiplayer in the game’s Settings, and make sure everyone is signed into the Xbox account they use for the game. If a PC player cannot host, update Gaming Services through Microsoft Store and restart the PC. These checks address the official troubleshooting guidance before you try less certain network workarounds.
Start with the official checks
- Check Xbox service status. Visit the State of Decay 2 multiplayer support page and follow its link to Xbox service status. If Xbox services are interrupted, local setting changes may not help; try again when service is available.
- Enable Multiplayer in the game. Open State of Decay 2’s Settings and confirm Multiplayer is turned on. The setting is a prerequisite for connecting with friends.
- Confirm Xbox account sign-in for every player. Cross-play works across platforms and storefronts, but players need to be signed into Xbox accounts. Exchange Xbox gamertags so you can find one another. On PC, Xbox Game Bar (press Windows + G) can be used to invite or join friends.
If a PC player cannot host
Undead Labs’ current PC-specific guidance is to update Gaming Services, restart the PC, and try hosting again. In Microsoft Store, open Library and select Get updates. Once updates finish, restart Windows before testing the session.
If the session connects but is unstable
State of Decay 2 multiplayer uses peer-to-peer networking rather than a dedicated game server for each session. The official support page says session quality depends on the host’s internet connection, and a tether keeps guests from straying too far from the host. Guests are therefore affected by the host’s connection and must stay within the game’s tether limit.
As a diagnostic experiment, have the other player host and compare the result. If the session works better with the host switched, that points toward a difference in the host-side connection or setup; it is not a guaranteed fix or an official prescribed remedy.

Check that the session setup is compatible
The game supports cross-play across platforms and storefronts, with the Xbox account serving as the common way to connect. A session can include the host and up to three guests, for four players total. If an invite or join attempt fails, compare these details for each player:
- Platform and storefront used to launch the game.
- Whether each person is signed into the Xbox account associated with their game.
- Whether Multiplayer is enabled in Settings.
- Who is hosting, and whether changing hosts changes the result.
- For a PC host, whether Gaming Services has been updated and the PC restarted.
- Whether Xbox services are available.
When the basic checks do not resolve it
The official support page explains how to find the installed game version and points players to the State of Decay Discord and subreddit for community discussion. It also says direct support ticket intake is closed; State of Decay 2 received its final content update in October 2024. Community posts can help identify whether others are reporting a similar issue, but they are not a substitute for confirming service status or account and game settings.

An older Undead Labs support article from January 2019 mentioned internet connectivity, host settings, Xbox service status, avoiding excessive Alt+Tab use on PC because it could suspend the game and end a session, and checking router settings or third-party antivirus. Treat these as older possibilities rather than current, guaranteed fixes. Subscription requirements can change by platform and over time, so verify the current platform policy rather than relying on that article’s historical Xbox One requirement.
