There is no defensible national “fastest route” without those measurements: a nearby city, cloud region or ISP does not guarantee the shortest or most reliable path.
Start with the users and endpoints that matter
Define the paths your application needs to serve: for example, users in Perth connecting to a Sydney-hosted API, or users in Brisbane connecting to candidate deployments in Sydney and Melbourne. Test the live service endpoints where possible. A cloud provider’s general reachability target can help screen locations, but it is not a substitute for measuring the intended application.
AWS’s 4 August 2026 guide to measuring latency before deployment recommends checking AWS-maintained regional EC2 reachability targets and carrier looking-glass tools. It also recommends traceroute analysis to help distinguish distance-related delay from routing-related delay. Use these as diagnostic inputs alongside end-to-end tests.
Build a route comparison, not a single ping result
For each relevant source location and destination, collect results over multiple times and expected operating conditions. A single ping can conceal busy-hour congestion, route changes or intermittent loss. Keep results segmented by user location and time window; a distributed Australian audience may not have one best route.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Measure | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Round-trip latency | How long a request and response take between the test source and destination. Measure against the application endpoint, not just a nearby region. |
| Variation over time (jitter or stability) | Whether response times remain consistent, which matters to interactive and real-time workloads. |
| Packet loss | Whether packets fail to arrive, potentially harming application responsiveness even when average latency looks acceptable. |
| Throughput under expected load | Whether the route can carry the application’s traffic volume without becoming a bottleneck. |
| Route and path changes | Whether the network path changes and whether traceroute suggests avoidable path inflation. |
| Resilience and recurring cost | How the candidate behaves during failures and what it costs to operate on an ongoing basis. |
Compare candidates using the same source locations, endpoint behavior, time windows and load assumptions. A route that wins on average latency may still be a poor choice if it has unstable response times, loss, inadequate capacity or unacceptable failure behavior.
Do not equate geographic proximity with low latency
Physical distance is only one factor; routing and network conditions also matter. AWS cautions in its Route 53 latency-based routing documentation that “If you aren’t using resources in an AWS Region, the actual latency between your users and your resources can vary significantly from AWS latency data.” A nearby AWS region or a latency figure measured to AWS therefore does not establish the best route to a different provider or your own endpoint.

Traceroute can help expose where a path appears longer or more complex than geography alone suggests, but interpret it as a diagnostic view of the route rather than a complete performance verdict. End-to-end measurements remain the deciding evidence for the application.
Use cloud-region selection and latency DNS within their limits
If the app runs in several cloud regions, first compare measurements from representative users to the actual workload endpoints in each candidate region. Only then decide whether moving, duplicating or balancing workloads is likely to help.

For a multi-region AWS service, Route 53 latency-based routing can direct a DNS query to a configured AWS Region based on AWS latency data for the user. It is provider-specific: it does not measure arbitrary third-party destinations or guarantee the lowest latency to a non-AWS endpoint. The AWS documentation explicitly warns that latency to other resources, even in the same city, can differ significantly.
Consider peering when your network can use it
Peering is a network-level arrangement in which networks exchange traffic directly. IX Australia lists exchanges in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, with presence in 27 data centres. Its peering page describes both exchange peering and virtual peering; its peer and partner directory lists service providers, cloud platforms and content networks, while noting that the listing is not exhaustive.

Peering is not automatically available to an application developer or consumer, and it does not guarantee a latency improvement. The practical benefit depends on your network, traffic, counterparties and connectivity arrangements. If you do not operate a network or exchange port, ask your ISP, hosting provider or connectivity provider whether it offers virtual peering and whether the relevant destinations are reachable that way. IX Australia’s technical guide covers configuration considerations for networks that do peer.
Provider statements about their own network designs should not be generalized into a route recommendation. For example, Microsoft says, “At Microsoft, we choose and use direct interconnects instead of transit-links,” in its Microsoft Global Network: Azure Backbone documentation. That describes Microsoft’s approach, not proof that a specific Australian route to your app will be fastest.

Use national broadband figures only as context
The ACCC’s Broadband performance data page, last updated June 2026, includes final program observations for March 2026. It reports average latency for NBN fixed wireless of 41.7 ms across all hours and 43.5 ms during busy hours. These are technology-level averages, not a comparison of ISPs or routes to a particular application endpoint, so they cannot identify the fastest route for your users.
Quick Recap
A practical decision sequence
- Map the audience. Select source locations that represent the users and networks the app must serve.
- Define the destinations. Test the actual service endpoints and any candidate deployments, not merely a city or cloud region name.
- Collect comparable measurements. Measure latency, variation, loss and throughput at multiple times; record the path and operating conditions.
- Check the trade-offs. Evaluate capacity, resilience during failures and recurring cost alongside raw latency.
- Investigate network options. If results point to routing limitations, ask the relevant ISP, host or network provider about peering or virtual peering and verify availability for the traffic in question.
- Validate the chosen configuration. Re-test from the same user locations after deployment or DNS changes, since a regional preference or provider metric is not a substitute for observing the live application path.
