It is a display preference—not a general boost to a site’s organic Search ranking. Selected sites still need fresh, relevant content, and other sources can appear alongside them.
What Preferred Sources changes in Google Search
Preferred Sources lets you tell Google which websites you would like to see more often in certain Search features. In Top Stories, Google says selected sites may appear more prominently or in a dedicated “From your sources” section when they have fresh, relevant coverage for your search. Other publishers’ results can still appear; selecting a source does not reserve the entire section for it.
Google announced the feature on August 12, 2025, describing it as a way for readers to see more coverage from sites they follow. The appearance is conditional: Google’s product manager said selected sources would be shown prominently “when those sources have published fresh and relevant content for your search.” Google’s launch announcement explains the original Top Stories experience.
How to select a preferred source
Google’s initial instructions apply to searches involving news and Top Stories. The exact controls can vary by account, language, and interface, but the announced flow is:

- Search Google for a news topic.
- Find Top Stories and open the source selector beside it.
- Search for the website you want, then select it.
- Refresh the results to see the updated presentation.
Google says users can choose as many sources as they like and manage their selections. If a preferred site has no fresh, relevant article for the query, selecting it does not guarantee that it will appear.

Top Stories
Preferred Sources began as a Top Stories control. Depending on the query and available coverage, selected websites may appear more frequently or in a “From your sources” section, alongside results from other sites.

AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google announced on May 27, 2026, that selected websites would also be represented in AI Overviews and AI Mode, where links from those sites can be labeled. Google described adding sources through Search personalization settings. Its announcement reported that users had selected more than 345,000 unique sources at that time. Google’s overview of Search and original content describes the expansion.
Does choosing a preferred source improve its Google ranking?
No—not as a general organic-ranking signal. Google’s June 3, 2026, website-owner guidance, updated August 31, says the preference control will not be used as a ranking signal for Search results outside generative AI Search features. The stated effect is on presentation within the named experiences: Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode. It should not be described as a sitewide ranking boost or as a way to improve a page’s position in ordinary Search results. Google’s guidance for website owners sets out that scope.

Availability and rollout
Google’s rollout announcements describe availability in stages. It launched Preferred Sources for users in the United States and India in August 2025; those users did not need to enroll in Labs. Google later announced worldwide availability for English-language users on December 16, 2025, followed by availability in all supported languages on April 30, 2026.
“All supported languages” is Google’s stated scope, not a claim that every language is supported or that every account and interface shows identical controls. The dated announcements are the December 2025 English-language rollout and the April 2026 language expansion.

What the feature means for publishers
Google has encouraged publishers to invite readers to select their websites. In an August 20, 2026, announcement, it described an embeddable Preferred Source button: a reader can click it to add the site as a preferred source and return to the publisher’s page. Google says selection may make a site easier to find in Top Stories, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, but it does not promise placement or ranking gains. The button is an audience-engagement option, not evidence of a paid affiliate program. Google’s personalization announcement describes the button.

| Figure | What Google reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| More than 345,000 unique sources selected | Google reported this count in May 2026. | A Google-reported adoption count at that time; it is not a measure of traffic or ranking impact. |
| More than 600,000 unique sources selected | Google reported this later count in August 2026. | A later company-reported adoption count, not an independent usage audit. |
| Twice as likely to click through | Google said users were twice as likely to click through after marking a site as a Preferred Source. Google made the comparison in both its December 2025 and April 2026 rollout posts. | The cited posts do not state the sample, timeframe, denominator, study design, or uncertainty. Treat it as Google’s reported comparison, not proof that selecting a source causes more clicks. |
The two rollout posts containing the click-through comparison are Google’s December 2025 announcement and Google’s April 2026 announcement.
