If your Pixel Buds lose charge overnight, first confirm they are actually charging in the case: seat each bud in its matching slot, check the model’s status light, and make sure the case has power. If the buds are seated and the charging indication appears but their charge still falls, Google’s guidance does not establish a normal overnight loss rate or a single cause; use the checks below to narrow down the problem.
First, check whether the earbuds are charging in the case
Putting Pixel Buds in the case does not by itself confirm that they are charging. Match each earbud to its left or right slot, insert it, and rotate it until the magnet holds it in place. Google says the status light should quickly blink for each earbud when inserted, though light behavior varies by generation. See Google’s charging instructions for your model.
If no expected light appears, adjust the earbud and try closing and reopening the case lid to realign the connection. For Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a, Google’s current charging instructions describe a breathing white light for earbuds that are charging; do not assume that indicator applies to other generations.
Use the battery levels to identify what is losing charge
Before changing anything, note the battery levels of the left earbud, right earbud, and case. On Android, the Pixel Buds app or settings, or a battery widget, can show these levels. On some older models, the earbuds must be connected before their battery information appears. Checking all three helps distinguish earbuds that were not replenished from a case that is itself running low.

- Buds outside the case: They are not being charged by the case while they are out.
- Buds in the case with no charging indication: Check seating, contacts, and case power.
- Buds indicated as charging but losing charge: Continue with the power and retest steps below; the indicator alone does not establish why charge is being lost.
Clean the contacts and reseat the earbuds
- Remove each earbud and use a dry, soft cloth to wipe the magnetic charging contacts on the buds and inside the case. Google does not specify a particular cloth material or brand.
- Check that each ear tip is securely attached, then put the earbuds back in their matching slots and rotate them until secured.
- Look for the appropriate charging indication for your model. If it does not appear, adjust the earbuds, then close and reopen the lid.
Google notes that a poor connection or dirty charging area can contribute to charging problems. This is a connection check, not a guarantee that cleaning will resolve every overnight battery loss. See Google’s troubleshooting steps for Pixel Buds that will not charge.
Make sure the case has enough power
The case has its own battery and can charge the earbuds when it is unplugged, but it cannot keep replenishing them if its battery is depleted. Charge the case and check its status light. For Pixel Buds Pro 2, Google says a slowly blinking orange earbud indicator means the earbuds still have charge while the case is below 20%. Google also says that, in its described closed-case check, no light means the case does not have enough battery to charge the earbuds. These interpretations are specific to the Pro 2 guide; check your generation’s instructions at Google’s status-light guide.

If you charge the case with a cable, inspect the cable and its connection. If your model supports Qi wireless charging, reposition the case on the charging surface. Google’s cited guidance lists Qi support for Pixel Buds (2020), Pixel Buds Pro, and Pixel Buds Pro 2 cases; do not assume another generation supports it.
Retest, then pair or reset if charging still fails
- With both earbuds inside, charge the case for at least 30 minutes.
- Pair the earbuds again and check whether the buds and case show expected charging indications.
- If the earbuds still will not charge, follow Google’s reset instructions for your exact Pixel Buds generation. Reset procedures can vary by model; use the instructions linked from Google’s charging troubleshooting page.
Do not use listening-time figures as an overnight benchmark
Google’s published battery-life figures are approximate listening-time results under test conditions, not measurements of how much charge Pixel Buds should retain while idle in a closed case overnight. Google says actual battery life varies with the device, enabled features, use, environment, and other factors. The available guidance does not publish a normal overnight standby-drain percentage, so there is no sourced threshold here for deciding that a particular overnight loss is normal or abnormal.

If the case also loses charge quickly
Track the case level separately from the earbud levels. Google Help lists a case-battery replacement support route for Pixel Buds 2a, but that model-specific listing does not establish that every Pixel Buds case battery can be replaced or that replacement is the answer to overnight earbud drain.
