Verified means Valve expects a game to work great on Steam Deck out of the box. Playable means you can play it, but may need to make a manual adjustment first—such as choosing a community controller layout or using the touchscreen to get through a launcher. The label describes compatibility and setup, not whether a game is good or how fast it runs.

These are compatibility categories, not performance grades. A Playable game is not necessarily slow or poor-performing; the distinction is whether it meets Valve’s expected experience and whether a player may have to adjust something.
What Verified checks
Valve assesses Verified games across four areas: input, display, seamlessness, and system support. Its Steam Deck compatibility guidance describes the criteria.
- Input: The game should support a controller, show appropriate controller input icons, and bring up the on-screen keyboard automatically when needed.
- Display: It should support the Deck’s default resolution—1280×800 or 1280×720—use suitable default settings, and have legible text.
- Seamlessness: It should not show compatibility warnings, and any launcher should be navigable with a controller.
- System support: For games that run through Proton, the game and its middleware, including anti-cheat, should be supported by Proton.
A game can be playable while missing one of these out-of-the-box expectations. The category does not tell you which one; inspect that game’s compatibility details rather than assuming every Playable title has the same limitation.

Can you play a game marked Playable?
Yes. Playable means the game can be played, though Valve warns that it may require manual tweaking. The adjustment could be as simple as changing the controller configuration or using the touchscreen to operate a launcher. Check the game’s compatibility details in the Steam library or store to see what applies to that title.
Where to find the rating and details
Ratings appear in the Steam Deck library and when browsing the store on the device. You can also filter library views by compatibility rating. Valve says its rating applies to tested titles on both Steam Deck LCD and OLED models.

Can a rating change?
Yes. Valve says compatibility reviews are ongoing: new games and updates are assessed, and improvements to the Deck can make some previously unsupported games work. Treat a rating as guidance about expected compatibility, not a permanent guarantee.
Players can opt in to send feedback about their experience. Valve says this feedback helps it assess the experience and review process, but it does not directly change a game’s category and is not crowdsourced compatibility testing.
