Which PS5 Digital Editions support a disc drive?
Sony lists PS5 model groups CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 as compatible with its detachable Disc Drive. That means you should not assume an older PS5 Digital Edition can be upgraded just because it is a Digital Edition.
Find the model number printed on your console and compare it with Sony’s PS5 Disc Drive setup and compatibility instructions before ordering. If your model group is not CFI-2000 or CFI-7000, the cited Sony guidance does not establish that the drive will work with it.
What kind of disc drive can you add?
The supported add-on is Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive, which attaches directly to a compatible console. Sony’s instructions do not identify a generic external USB optical drive as an alternative, so do not buy one expecting it to provide the same disc-game function.

Sony’s CFI-70XX Quick Start Guide says disc-based games can be played when a separately sold disc drive is installed. That guidance establishes game-disc use; it does not, by itself, confirm movie playback or support for other disc formats.
How to attach the detachable drive
- Shut down the PS5 completely and disconnect its cables.
- Wait for the console to cool, then place it on a soft cloth on a flat surface.
- Remove the cover and the short horizontal stand feet as shown in Sony’s setup instructions.
- Attach the drive following Sony’s illustrated steps, then complete the console setup and pairing.
Keep the cover and short feet you remove. Sony’s instructions note that these parts are needed if you later use the console without the drive attached.

Is internet required?
Yes, for the initial setup: Sony states, “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” The support instructions establish an internet requirement for pairing during setup; they do not say that an ongoing connection is required simply to use an attached drive.
