You can make a Steam-recognized controller feel closer to a PlayStation 2 layout by remapping its controls in Steam Input. Choose the game action for each button and direction, then test the layout in that game. Steam does not document a universal preset called “PS2,” and remapping cannot make a game support controller input if it does not.
What “PS2-style” means in Steam
Steam Input maps a controller’s physical buttons and directions to commands a game understands. To create a PS2-style arrangement, assign each control to the action that corresponds to your preferred familiar layout and to the game’s own prompts. The names and positions of buttons can differ across controllers, so map by the physical control and desired in-game action, not by assuming every device labels its buttons the same way.
Steam’s configurable Button Pad and Directional Pad styles can also send keyboard or mouse commands. That can help with games that do not accept gamepad input, but it is a manual workaround: keyboard-and-mouse commands may not reproduce analog movement or camera control naturally. Check whether your controller and game are suitable
Steam Big Picture lists Xbox controllers, DualShock 4, DualSense, and Nintendo Switch Pro controllers among its supported controller types. Steam says, “Third party controllers often work, but are not officially supported.” That distinction matters if you are using an older or less common device. Steam’s Big Picture controller-support guidance does not establish compatibility for every controller or adapter.

Steam also distinguishes games by how completely they support controllers:
- Full Controller Support: Steam says the game can be downloaded, launched, and played using only a controller.
- Partial Controller Support: A controller may work during gameplay, but setup or parts of the interface may still require a mouse or keyboard.
Those labels describe a game’s support level; they do not guarantee that every controller will work identically. Steam notes that not all Steam games support controller use, even though any Steam game can be played in Big Picture mode. See Steam’s explanation of controller support in Big Picture.

Map your controls in Steam Input
- Connect the controller and check that Steam recognizes it. Open Steam and confirm the game accepts controller input or is identified as supporting a controller. If you mean an original PS2 controller connected through a USB adapter, Steam’s support material does not verify a particular adapter or promise that it will be detected.
- Open the game’s controller layout or configuration in Steam. Client labels and navigation can change, so follow the controls shown in your current Steam client rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Assign the game’s actions to the controls you want to use. Set each face button, shoulder button, trigger, stick, and directional input to the corresponding action. When the game supports gamepad input, choose gamepad commands. For a game without controller support, consider keyboard or mouse commands only if its controls suit that approach.
- Save or apply the layout, launch the game, and test it. Check each control against the game’s prompts and behavior. Adjust the mapping if an action is missing, duplicated, or assigned to the wrong physical control.
- Try a community configuration if your layout is not working well. It may provide a useful starting point, but still test it in the game and change controls as needed.
Choose gamepad or keyboard-and-mouse commands
The right input style depends on what the game accepts. A gamepad mapping sends gamepad actions; it is appropriate when the game supports them. Steam Support cautions, “Gamepad-only input styles will only work with gamepad supported games.” A keyboard or mouse mapping can provide basic control in some unsupported games, but it cannot turn those games into native gamepad experiences.
In particular, a digital button assigned to movement does not necessarily behave like an analog stick, and mouse commands may not produce camera control that feels like a gamepad. If the game expects keyboard and mouse, or still needs them for menus, you may need to keep those devices available.

Troubleshoot a layout that does not work
- Check the Steam Overlay. Steam says the overlay is important to Steam Controller functionality. Test it with the controller’s Steam button or Shift+Tab, and make sure the overlay is enabled.
- Confirm the game supports the chosen input style. Gamepad-only commands require a game with gamepad support. If the game lacks that support, try suitable keyboard or mouse commands instead.
- Try a community configuration. Load one for the specific game, then verify its bindings rather than assuming it matches your preferred layout.
- Test for conflicting software. Steam recommends disabling conflicting programs as a troubleshooting step.
- Restart Steam. If the overlay and configuration still fail, restarting the client is among Steam’s suggested troubleshooting steps.

Mapping a layout and connecting a legacy controller are separate problems. The steps above apply once Steam recognizes a controller. Steam’s documentation cited here does not identify a specific PS2-to-USB adapter, confirm a compatibility list, or establish that an original PS2 controller will be detected through an adapter. Check the adapter’s compatibility details and verify that Steam recognizes the connected device before configuring its buttons.
