Before installing a Samsung Galaxy beta, back up the phone to a computer with Samsung Smart Switch PC. Samsung recommends this because unexpected beta behavior can cause data loss. Verify that Smart Switch reports the backup is complete, then keep the backup available in case you need to roll back.
Back up your Galaxy to a computer with Smart Switch
Samsung’s One UI Beta Program guidance recommends backing up to a computer with Smart Switch before installing beta software. Samsung’s Smart Switch instructions describe connecting the phone by USB and following the computer app’s prompts.
- Update your installed apps. Samsung advises doing this as part of preparing for beta software. Also check the beta instructions shown for your device and program; availability and steps can vary by model, operating system, and country.
- Prepare a computer with Samsung Smart Switch PC. If you need a cable, use one that fits the phone and computer ports and supports data transfer.
- Connect the Galaxy phone to the computer with a USB cable. Open Smart Switch on the computer and follow its on-screen instructions.
- Choose the Backup option in Smart Switch and proceed through the prompts.
- Wait for Smart Switch to report that the backup is complete. Do not assume a copy was created until the app confirms completion.
The categories Smart Switch can transfer depend on the phone’s operating system, software version, and connection option. Samsung does not promise that every app or data type will be included for every device, so check the available categories and prompts for your phone.
Keep the backup available in case you roll back
A beta backup is useful not only before installation but also if you decide to return to the previous release. Samsung’s beta rollback guidance says that using Smart Switch PC to return to the previous release resets the device and removes data generated during beta testing. Samsung says a computer backup can be restored after rollback.

Keep access to the computer and the backup until the beta is stable for you or you are comfortable proceeding without the option to restore that pre-beta copy. A backup made before the beta will not preserve data created afterward; consider how you will handle anything important added during testing before starting a rollback.
Other backup options you can use alongside Smart Switch
Samsung also documents Samsung Cloud and Google backup as Galaxy backup options. They can provide additional copies, but they are not interchangeable guarantees: supported data and settings vary by service and device, and Samsung’s beta-specific recommendation is the computer backup.

- Google backup: Samsung’s Google account backup guidance explains the available backup path. Confirm that the relevant account and backup settings are enabled.
Whichever additional method you use, check its status and available data categories rather than assuming it captures the same information as Smart Switch. Cloud copies also depend on account access and available storage.
