Reduce garden water use by fixing waste first, then adjusting irrigation to the plants, soil, weather and layout you actually have. Redirecting overspray, grouping plants with similar needs, covering bare soil and watering according to soil moisture can cut unnecessary irrigation without imposing a one-size-fits-all schedule.

Start by finding where water is being wasted

Before changing plants or buying equipment, observe the garden during and between watering. Look for sprinklers wetting pavement, leaks, blocked or misdirected heads, runoff, and areas that stay wet while nearby soil dries. Note differences in sun, shade and wind, and identify plants that show stress. These clues help distinguish a scheduling problem from an issue with soil, coverage or plant choice.

Outdoor residential water use in the United States is nearly 8 billion gallons per day, mainly for landscape irrigation, according to EPA WaterSense. Experts cited by EPA estimate that as much as 50 percent may be wasted through overwatering caused by inefficient irrigation methods and systems. That estimate describes potential waste across the stated scope; it is not a prediction of savings for an individual garden.

Fix simple irrigation problems first

  • Repair leaks and correct blocked, damaged or misdirected sprinkler heads.
  • Adjust spray so it lands on planted areas rather than pavement.
  • Inspect irrigation zones and schedules regularly, and update them when weather or seasons change.

These changes address water that is being lost regardless of which plants you grow. EPA’s watering guidance recommends directing sprinklers onto the landscape and maintaining the system.

Water according to plant and soil conditions

There is no universal watering interval that works for every garden. Need varies with plant species, soil texture, weather, season, sun and wind exposure, and whether a planting is newly established. Check the soil and plants rather than relying on a fixed calendar. EPA warns that “Watering plants or grass too frequently can drown plants or result in shallow roots.”

Where soil permits, watering less often but more thoroughly can encourage roots to grow deeper. Clay soil and sloped ground need particular care: water may run off before soaking in. Use shorter irrigation cycles with pauses between them so water can infiltrate. This cycle-and-soak approach is recommended in EPA’s home maintenance guidance.

Adjust as the season changes

Review schedules as conditions change rather than leaving them untouched through hot, cool, rainy or dry periods. A schedule that suits one season or a sunny bed may overwater a shaded area or a different season. Keep plant establishment in mind: newly planted trees and shrubs normally need irrigation while their roots establish. Reduce watering after establishment instead of withholding it immediately.

Group plants so one schedule fits each area

Arrange plants with similar water needs into separate irrigation zones, often called hydrozones. Account for exposure as well: a sunny, windy bed may dry faster than a shaded one. Avoid running lawn sprinklers and a shrub or flower bed on the same schedule when their needs differ. Separating areas makes it easier to water each appropriately instead of overwatering one group to keep another healthy.

When adding or replacing plants, choose species suited to your local climate, soil, sun, shade and exposure. “Native” or “drought-tolerant” does not automatically mean suitable for every region or site. Check regional recommendations and verify that a plant fits the conditions where it will grow. EPA’s plant-selection guidance and landscaping tips emphasize matching plants to local conditions.

Improve soil and cover bare ground

Healthy soil helps retain water, while mulch reduces evaporation, moderates soil temperature, suppresses weeds and helps limit erosion. Choose a mulch that suits both the plants and the soil. EPA’s general guidance is to apply 3 to 4 inches for most plants, but that is not a requirement for every species or setting. Excessive mulch can impede water reaching roots.

Keep organic mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and other woody plant bases to help avoid rot. Organic material also contributes to the soil as it decomposes. Rock mulch is not always a low-water choice: in sunny areas it can radiate heat and promote water loss, especially around plants from non-arid climates. Match the material and depth to local conditions rather than applying the same treatment everywhere.

Choose irrigation equipment for the garden you have

Microirrigation for beds, trees and shrubs

Drip and other microirrigation systems deliver water slowly and directly to roots. They can be useful for beds, trees and shrubs, particularly where sprinklers wet paths or large areas of bare ground. A garden drip-irrigation kit is one way to provide targeted watering, but results depend on the layout, plants, soil and correct setup; no particular water saving applies to every kit or garden. Follow the system’s instructions and check emitters for clogs or leaks.

Controllers for automatic irrigation

If you already have compatible automatic irrigation, a WaterSense-labeled soil-moisture-based controller can use soil readings to bypass a scheduled watering when moisture is sufficient. Weather-based controllers instead use local weather and landscape conditions to adjust schedules. Choose a controller that works with the existing system and garden layout; a controller is not useful simply because it is labeled smart.

EPA estimates that an average home with automatic landscape irrigation can save more than 15,000 gallons annually by installing a WaterSense-labeled soil-moisture-based irrigation controller. This is EPA’s estimate for that type of home and equipment, not a guarantee for every property. See the agency’s soil moisture-based controller guidance for how the devices work.

When to replace plants or get a system audit

Make long-term planting changes gradually. Keep plants that are healthy and valuable to you; when replacing plants, choose locally appropriate options and group them by water need. Newly planted trees and shrubs still need irrigation while establishing, even if they are intended to need less water once mature.

If an irrigation system is difficult to tune, has uneven coverage or keeps producing runoff, a certified irrigation professional can assess its design and operation. EPA suggests professional system audits and recommends an interval of roughly three years for irrigation systems; local availability and the system’s condition may affect what is practical. See EPA’s guidance on working with an irrigation professional.
