Then remove standing water with safe equipment, clean and dry what can be salvaged, discard contaminated materials that cannot be cleaned promptly, and keep people away from mold exposure. CDC advises drying the home and wet belongings as soon as possible—within 24–48 hours if possible. That is a prompt-action target, not a guarantee that mold will not grow.
What should I do first after my house floods?
Check for immediate hazards before entering or using equipment. Flooded buildings can contain electrical, gas, sewage, and mold hazards. Follow local emergency and public-health instructions; sewage, chemicals, structural damage, or other local conditions may require additional precautions.
- Return in daylight if possible. Use a battery-powered flashlight, not candles or gas lanterns.
- Do not enter standing water to reach electrical controls. Never operate a switch or electrical appliance while standing in water, and do not use devices that may have become wet. If the main power switch is reachable from a dry location, turn power off when standing water is present. If reaching it would mean entering water, call an electrician. Have an electrician assess a potentially damaged electrical system before power is restored. See the CDC guidance for reentering a flooded home (Aug. 24, 2026).
- Leave immediately if you smell gas or suspect a leak. Turn off the main gas valve only if you can do so safely, open windows if safe, then leave and notify the gas company or emergency authorities. Do not return until the home has been cleared.
- Air out a home that has been closed for several days. CDC advises briefly entering to open doors and windows, then airing the home for at least 30 minutes before staying inside for an extended period. Leave if you encounter a hazard.
How do I remove standing water safely?
Use water-removal equipment only after electrical use has been confirmed safe. When power is available and an electrician has said it is safe, CDC lists a wet-dry shop vacuum, the vacuum function of a carpet cleaner, an electric water-transfer pump, or a sump pump as options. Choose equipment according to the amount of water and what can be operated safely; do not use electrical equipment in wet conditions if its safety is uncertain.
If power is unavailable or unsafe, CDC says a portable generator can power water-removal equipment. Run gasoline-powered equipment outdoors at least 20 feet from doors, windows, or vents—never inside a home, basement, garage, porch, or another enclosed or partly enclosed area. Wear rubber boots when operating equipment in wet areas. These precautions do not make it safe to enter water that may be electrically energized.

How do I dry out my house after a flood?
Start drying as soon as it is safe. CDC recommends cleaning and drying the home and wet items within 24–48 hours if possible. Open doors and windows when weather permits, and use fans and dehumidifiers once they can be used safely. Position fans at a window or door to blow air outdoors, rather than farther into the house; CDC says this helps avoid spreading mold.
Drying also means stopping new moisture from getting in. Repair leaks, keep roof and gutter runoff away from the home, and make sure the ground slopes away from it. Crawl spaces need drainage and ventilation to dry. Drying promptly reduces the time materials remain wet, but does not guarantee mold will not develop.

What should I throw away after flood damage?
Base the decision on what the item is made of, what it contacted, and whether it can be cleaned and dried promptly. CDC advises throwing away items that cannot be cleaned or dried quickly. Porous items can retain contamination and moisture; examples CDC identifies include:
- Mattresses, carpeting and padding, rugs, upholstered furniture, and pillows
- Stuffed animals, baby toys, foam-rubber items, and cosmetics
- Books, wall coverings, and other paper products
Discard drywall and insulation contaminated by sewage or floodwater. For items and surfaces that can be salvaged, clean thoroughly with hot water and laundry or dish detergent. CDC lists flooring, concrete, molding, wood and metal furniture, countertops, appliances, sinks, and plumbing fixtures among surfaces and objects that can be cleaned.

What should I wear to clean up mold after a flood?
CDC recommends at least a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, protective gloves made of non-latex material such as vinyl or nitrile (rubber is also an option), and goggles that provide complete eye protection. For extended removal work such as taking out moldy drywall, a half-face or full-face respirator may be appropriate.
People with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD should not take part in mold cleanup. CDC also advises people with asthma, COPD, or immune compromise not to stay in a moldy home while it is being cleaned. Protective gear does not make a structurally unsafe building or a large, contaminated cleanup safe for an untrained person.

How should I clean mold, and what stops it coming back?
CDC says mold on hard surfaces may be cleaned with household products, soap and water, or a bleach solution made with no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water. Before using bleach, open windows and doors, follow the product label, and never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleaner. Clean only when it is safe to do so and use the protective equipment appropriate to the work.
Cleaning visible mold alone does not solve the problem if materials remain wet or water keeps entering. Find and address the moisture source, and dry the affected area. When the cleanup extent or contamination is beyond what you can safely handle, seek advice from local public-health authorities or a qualified remediation professional.
Can I turn on my air conditioner after a flood?
Do not turn on an HVAC system that may have taken on floodwater or become mold-contaminated. CDC warns that a contaminated system can spread mold through the home. Ask a maintenance or service professional experienced in mold cleanup to inspect and clean it; use it only after that professional considers it clean and safe.
Quick Recap
What else needs professional attention?
- Electrical damage: Have an electrician assess the system before restoring power if it may have been flooded or damaged.
- Gas odor or suspected leak: Leave and notify the gas company or emergency authorities; return only after the home is cleared.
- Flooded or mold-contaminated HVAC: Have it inspected and cleaned by a professional experienced in mold cleanup before use.
- Private well in a flooded area: CDC says to have it tested before using the water.
- Cleanup beyond safe household work: Contact local public-health authorities or a qualified remediation professional for advice, especially where sewage or other contamination is involved.
