To keep a dash cam recording after you park without letting it draw power indefinitely, use a compatible hardwire kit with three correctly identified connections: BAT to a constant-live fuse, ACC to a fuse that switches off with the ignition, and ground as specified by the kit. Then enable Parking Mode and the camera’s supported low-voltage cutoff or parking timer. This reduces the risk of a drained battery, but no wiring setup or cutoff can guarantee that every car will start after every parking period.
How parking-mode wiring works
A hardwire kit typically has three connections. The BAT lead supplies power after the car is switched off; the ACC lead tells the camera when ignition or accessory power has stopped, prompting it to enter Parking Mode; and ground completes the circuit at the location specified in the kit instructions. The camera and hardwire kit must support Parking Mode together. VIOFO describes the constant-power and accessory connections in its parking-mode FAQ.
A low-voltage cutoff or parking timer limits how long the camera can draw from the vehicle battery. Some cameras also offer lower-consumption parking or standby modes. The features and controls differ by model, so use the exact camera and kit manuals rather than assuming settings or wire colors are interchangeable.
Before connecting anything
- Confirm the camera and hardwire kit are compatible and that both support the intended parking behavior.
- Read the camera and kit wiring instructions, along with the vehicle owner’s manual for fuse-box location, fuse type, and circuits that must not be tapped.
- Have a circuit tester or multimeter available to identify fuse behavior; do not infer it from a slot label or wire color.
- Check the kit’s instructions for the required fuse tap, fuse type, orientation, and grounding point.
- If you are unsure about fuse selection, vehicle electronics, or cable routing, consider a qualified automotive-electronics installer. Wire the dash cam step by step
- Identify a constant-live fuse and a switched accessory fuse. With a circuit tester or multimeter, check candidate circuits with the ignition on and off. The constant-live circuit remains powered after shutdown; the switched circuit loses power. Thinkware advises verifying both states instead of assuming a fuse’s behavior. Fuse layouts and suitable circuits vary by vehicle.
- Connect the labeled leads with the kit disconnected from the camera. Attach BAT to the verified constant-live source and ACC to the verified switched source. Connect ground exactly as the kit specifies. Follow the wiring diagram and the fuse-tap type and orientation specified for your actual kit and vehicle.
- Route and secure the cable safely. Follow the camera and vehicle installation guidance, keeping wiring clear of airbag paths and safety-critical components. Use vehicle-specific documentation or an installer if you cannot confirm a safe route.
- Set the camera for parked use. Reconnect the camera, enable Parking Mode, and turn on its supported battery-protection cutoff. If available, set a parking timer or a lower-consumption event mode. Confirm that the camera reports or otherwise indicates a transition into Parking Mode after ignition-off.
- Check the shutdown behavior. Confirm the camera stops drawing power when its documented cutoff or timer condition is reached. If it does not enter Parking Mode, stays powered unexpectedly, or the vehicle reports a battery warning, stop using the setup until the wiring and settings have been checked.
Choose protection settings for your camera and car
There is no universal cutoff voltage that suits every car. Battery condition and vehicle behavior matter, and a cutoff reduces risk rather than making parking power unlimited. Check the camera or kit’s specified controls and do not lower the cutoff simply to extend recording without understanding the effect on the vehicle battery.

Manufacturer examples illustrate why settings should not be generalized. Pioneer lists an 11.8 V low-voltage protection threshold for the compatible camera use described on its RD-HWK300 product page; that is a product specification, not a general recommendation. Thinkware says its camera powers down after voltage remains below the selected protection value for more than five minutes. It also warns that if voltage is already below the selected value upon entering Parking Mode, the camera may fail to recognize the threshold and could drain the battery. Garmin documents a different behavior for its Constant Power Cable: it shuts down after ten minutes if it detects the battery below 12 V. That applies to the cable and compatible use Garmin describes, not to dash cams generally; see Garmin’s battery-impact guidance. Follow the exact instructions for your model, and treat an unexpected early cutoff as a reason to check the setting and battery condition rather than immediately reducing protection.

Choose a power approach for your parking pattern

Troubleshoot common parking-mode problems
The camera turns off when the ignition turns off
Check that Parking Mode is enabled and that BAT reaches a verified constant-live source. Confirm the kit’s labeled leads are assigned to the correct circuits. VIOFO’s parking-mode troubleshooting guidance also covers abnormal parking behavior.
The camera stays in normal recording mode
Verify that ACC is connected to a circuit that loses power after shutdown, then confirm the camera’s Parking Mode setting. A constant-live BAT connection alone does not provide the ignition-change signal.

The camera stops recording sooner than expected
Check whether the selected cutoff or timer has been reached and confirm the setting for your exact model. Battery condition and the camera’s supported behavior can affect runtime; do not assume that lowering the cutoff is the safe fix.
The car shows a battery warning or will not start
Stop using the camera’s draw from the vehicle battery while you diagnose the setup. Check the wiring, kit operation, and settings, and seek professional diagnosis if needed. For frequent long parking periods, a compatible dedicated dash cam battery may better suit the use pattern.
