To use a Minecraft seed, enter it in the settings when creating a new world. Bedrock Edition also has a built-in Seed Picker with suggested seeds; Java Edition uses a seed field in its world-creation settings. Check the edition and game version attached to any seed listing, because a seed’s terrain and features are not guaranteed to match across every release.
Where do I enter a Minecraft seed?
Bedrock Edition
- Open Minecraft and select Create New, then Create New World.
- Open Game in the world settings. This is the route given in the official Minecraft Seed Picker FAQ.
- Enter your seed in the box beside the Seed field, or open the Seed Picker and select one of its suggestions.
- Check the seed listing’s edition and game-version notes, if provided, then create the world and confirm that it has the expected terrain or feature.
The official FAQ describes the Seed Picker as a Bedrock-exclusive feature that offers seeds intended to place players in or very near the biome or feature described. It was updated in connection with the world-generation changes in Caves & Cliffs Part II.

Java Edition
- Start the flow to create a new world.
- Find the seed field in the world-creation settings and enter the seed you want to use.
- Check the target edition and game version for the seed, then create the world.
Java’s interface wording and options can vary by platform or release. Use the labels shown in your current game; Bedrock’s documented menu path should not be assumed to be Java’s exact path.
How do I choose or find a seed?
You can enter a seed you already have, or, in Bedrock, pick a suggestion in the Seed Picker. Seed listings commonly describe a starting location, biome, or nearby feature; use the listing’s edition and version details to judge whether it is suitable for your world.

- Match the listing to Java or Bedrock.
- Check the stated game version and any platform notes.
- After creating the world, explore the relevant coordinates or area to verify the described result.

How do I use the same seed on Java and Bedrock?
Mojang’s Bedrock 1.18.30 release notes, published April 19, 2022, document signed 64-bit seeds from -9223372036854775808 to 9223372036854775807. The notes say those numeric seeds could be used between Bedrock and Java to produce the same world, and that non-numeric seed inputs in Bedrock produce the same seeds as Java. Read the dated claim in its release context: it is not a blanket guarantee that every later Java and Bedrock version generates identical terrain, structures, or gameplay. Version context matters. Java 1.18 introduced a new random number generator for Overworld generation, as noted in the Java 1.18 release notes. When sharing a seed across editions, include the edition and game version used, and treat the other edition’s result as something to verify rather than assume.

A seed may be accepted by the game without reproducing the exact location or features shown in a listing. A seed result can depend on edition and game version, and the official material cited here does not establish that all current Java and Bedrock versions preserve identical terrain and feature placement. If a result differs, confirm the seed was entered correctly and compare the listing’s version and edition with the world you created.
