To preview a Minecraft world before exploring it, enter its seed in an interactive seed map, select the matching edition, version, and dimension, then inspect biomes and feature layers at the coordinates you care about. Chunkbase’s Seed Map also lets you import a save, search the map, and share a view. Treat pins as useful leads rather than guarantees: some predictions can be missing or inaccurate, so confirm important locations in the game.
1. Get the Minecraft seed
For an existing world, you need its seed to generate the corresponding preview. In single-player, enter /seed in the game or use Chunkbase’s savegame import option. On a multiplayer server, /seed may require sufficient permissions; if you cannot run it, ask the server owner for the seed.
For a world you have not created yet, enter a seed you are considering or use the map’s Random control to generate one. The Seed Map documentation describes these options.
2. Match the map to the world
Enter the seed, then select the edition or platform, Minecraft version, and dimension that apply to the area you want to inspect. The map supports the Overworld, Nether, and End, but the features available depend on the selected version and dimension.

For a world that has been upgraded, different regions may have been generated under different versions. Match the map version to the version that generated the particular chunks you are checking; a single setting may not accurately describe every region in an older, upgraded world.
3. Turn on useful map layers
Open the Features panel and enable the structures or other features you want to find. Use biome highlighting, terrain coloring, and grid lines to understand the map, and use the coordinate controls to locate a known X/Z position. Some feature icons are hidden when zoomed out, so zoom in if a location appears to have no markers.
For Minecraft versions 1.18 and later, the default coastline colors can differ from the visible shape of land and water: the map shows underlying biome areas, which do not always match exact terrain. The terrain option adjusts colors to help with this mismatch. This is a display difference, not by itself evidence that the seed is wrong.

4. Explore, search, and read coordinates
Drag the map to move and zoom to inspect an area. Click a feature icon for available details. The search tool can look for biomes, structures, and other features around the current position and highlight matches. If you already have a target coordinate, use the coordinate controls to go to that X/Z location.

Not every feature has a Y coordinate on the map. Surface and seafloor structures are generally easier to check using X/Z alone; underground locations such as mineshafts and strongholds, and Nether fortresses, may require searching at different heights in-game. Small structures may also be marked at a chunk center rather than their exact position; Chunkbase notes that fossils, ruined portals, and trail ruins can be offset by 10–20 blocks.
5. Verify important pins in Minecraft
Use the map to plan where to look, then confirm important discoveries in the world. Chunkbase says some mapped features can be wrong or missing, including dungeons, world spawn positions, amethyst geodes near caves or mineshafts, and Nether fossils and dried ghasts on Bedrock. Villages and igloos can occasionally fail to generate in-game as predicted.

Bedrock predictions become somewhat less reliable millions of blocks from 0,0 and may be missing or shifted nearer the world border. The documentation does not provide a measured error rate, so these limitations should not be treated as a precise probability for any individual pin.
6. Save or share your preview
The map can create shareable deep links and screenshots. Saved seeds, markers, and completion state are stored locally in the browser. Export that data if you want to keep it before clearing browser data or moving to a different browser.
Fixing a seed-map mismatch
If the preview does not appear to match the game, check these likely causes in order:

- Seed entry: Confirm the seed is exact, with no extra characters or leading or trailing spaces.
- Edition and version: Confirm the selected edition or platform and the version that generated the region you are inspecting.
- Generation changes: Mods, add-ons, and data or behavior packs can alter world generation.
- Coordinates or height: Recheck X/Z values and, for underground or Nether structures, search at different Y levels.
- Map interpretation: In versions 1.18 and later, biome coloring may not trace the actual coastline. Some icons mark a chunk center rather than a structure’s precise position.
- Slime chunks: A slime chunk does not guarantee an immediate slime spawn; spawning is infrequent, so a chunk can appear unproductive if you have not waited long enough.
For a discrepancy report, include the seed, platform, version, and coordinates. Chunkbase also notes that some functions may be disabled in older browsers, so use a recent major browser.

If you do not have a seed yet, Chunkbase’s Seed Finder can search for candidate seeds using conditions such as a target biome or terrain height, nearby biomes, structures, feature clusters, or terrain. Select the intended edition and version, configure the conditions, search, and open matching results in preview maps.
The Seed Finder documentation cautions that sampled-area conditions trade precision for speed and that spawn positions are estimates. Its feature predictions also inherit the Seed Map’s limitations.
