Start by checking whether Windows registers the controller, then test a wired connection and isolate Steam Input, extra devices, and game-specific settings. This order helps identify whether the fault is in the controller or connection, Windows, the launcher, or the sports game—before you buy replacement hardware.
1. Check whether Windows detects the controller
Close the game, press Windows key + R, enter joy.cpl, and press Enter. In the Game Controllers panel, select your controller and open its properties to see whether button presses and stick movement register. EA’s Controller Issues: Complete Player Guide recommends this check as an early way to distinguish Windows-level detection from a problem inside a game.
- No input registers: try a different USB data cable or port, or switch connection mode. Test the controller with another device or game if possible.
- Windows registers input: the controller is communicating with the PC. Continue by testing the sports game, Steam Input if relevant, and other devices or software that could interfere.
Windows detecting a controller does not prove that a particular game recognizes it or maps its controls correctly.
2. Isolate wired, USB, and Bluetooth problems
Use a wired connection as a baseline when wireless input is unreliable. If the controller works over USB but not Bluetooth, investigate pairing and wireless conditions before changing game settings.

- Try another USB data cable that fits your controller; a charging-only cable may not carry data.
- Try a different USB port. Steam says intermittent disconnections, unreliable connections, or changes in responsiveness that vary by port can be consistent with USB scheduling or contention issues. Its USB troubleshooting guidance recommends isolating port-related behavior.
- For Bluetooth, remove old pairings from the PC and controller, pair them again, and test with the controller near the PC.
- If built-in Bluetooth remains unreliable after re-pairing, EA’s guide suggests a dedicated USB Bluetooth adapter as a fallback. It is not a guaranteed fix.
These checks help separate a connection problem from a game configuration problem; they do not establish that any one cable, port, or adapter will resolve every symptom.
3. Test Steam Input both ways
If you launch the game through Steam, test its Steam Input setting in both states. There is no universal answer: the right setting depends on the game and the input style it supports. Steam notes that a controller configuration may fail when a game does not support the selected input style.

- In Steam, open your Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s controller properties or controller settings.
- Set Steam Input to enabled, launch the game, and test the controls.
- If the issue remains, close the game, change Steam Input to disabled, relaunch, and test again.
Change one setting at a time and restart the game between tests so you can tell whether the change affects detection, button mapping, or duplicate input. EA’s guide also recommends trying Steam Input both enabled and disabled.
4. Look for duplicate input and software conflicts
Repeated button presses, doubled actions, or a character responding as if two controls were being pressed can happen when more than one input device or input path is active. EA’s guide recommends disconnecting other input devices and checking for duplicate entries such as XInput and HID.

- Disconnect extra controllers and other input devices temporarily, then retest.
- Temporarily close overlays while diagnosing. EA’s guide lists Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, Discord, GeForce Experience, and RivaTuner as candidates to turn off during testing.
- If you find duplicate controller entries, remove extra devices or connections where appropriate and test again.
Treat these as isolation steps, not proof that a particular overlay or device is the cause. Once the symptom changes, re-enable overlays and reconnect devices one at a time to identify what matters.
5. Find out whether the issue is specific to one game
Test the controller in another game or on another device. If it works there, focus on the sports game’s own controller options, launcher, and configuration rather than assuming the controller is defective. For EA games, EA’s guide also lists repairing the game through the EA App as a later troubleshooting step.

For EA SPORTS FC 26 online play
EA’s community guide suggests navigating the opening screens using only the controller when it works offline but not online. This is a title-specific check, not a general rule for other sports games.
EA’s Input Overlay guide describes an on-screen controller display for online matches. It can help you see the inputs you make and understand how they are processed during play. It does not establish whether a delay is caused by the local controller, the game, or the network, and it is a feedback aid rather than a universal fix.

Which troubleshooting option should you try?

Use calibration only when it applies
Steam’s controller test and calibration workflow is for Steam Controller support in Big Picture mode. Steam says calibration adjusts the joystick, track pads, and gyro, and recommends completing calibration twice. This is not a universal Windows calibration procedure for every gamepad, and it is separate from a sports game’s button mapping.
When to consider hardware or game repair
Do not start by replacing the controller. First confirm Windows input, try a known-good data cable and another port, test wired versus Bluetooth, compare Steam Input on and off if applicable, disconnect extra devices, and check another game. Consider a Bluetooth adapter only if built-in Bluetooth remains unreliable after re-pairing. If the controller works elsewhere but not in an EA title, repairing the game through the EA App is one of the later steps EA’s guide suggests.
