A Minecraft seed is an input to a versioned world-generation system—not a guarantee that every edition will create an identical world. Java and Bedrock moved much closer to seed and landscape parity around the 1.18 updates, and Bedrock 1.18.30 specifically added support for sharing 64-bit seeds with Java. But edition, game version, seed interpretation, settings, and the feature being compared can still matter.
Why can the same seed produce a different world?
A seed helps determine a world, but the generator that interprets it also matters. Java and Bedrock are separate editions, and world-generation changes between game versions can change the result associated with a seed. The phrase “same world” can also mean different things: matching broad terrain is not necessarily the same as matching every cave, structure, spawn point, or other feature.
Mojang’s Bedrock Seed Picker FAQ says Caves & Cliffs Part II substantially changed world generation to add the new mountains and caves, while bringing generation much closer to parity with Java. The Java 1.18 release notes also list a new random number generator for Overworld generation and seed-dependent bedrock generation. In its announcement for snapshot 21w41a, Mojang said the new generator meant more seeds would produce different results and that it moved features around. These are examples of why the exact game version matters; they do not establish that later versions use an unchanged 1.18 generator.
In a January 2022 developer Q&A, Mojang gameplay designer and developer Henrik described the scale of the 1.18 work: “The worldgen changes in 1.18 were so big that we mostly had to recreate terrain generation from scratch.” That is a historical explanation of the update, not a promise that every output matches across editions.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do Java and Bedrock use the same seeds?
Cross-edition seed compatibility improved around 1.18. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.18.30 release notes say Bedrock supports signed 64-bit seeds that can be used between Bedrock and Java to produce the same world. They also say non-numeric inputs in Bedrock’s seed interface now produce the same seeds as Java. Read this as evidence of improved seed interoperability—not a blanket guarantee that every generated detail is identical in every version.
Microsoft Creator documentation describes Java and Bedrock as having seed parity as of 1.18, meaning the same seed generates the same landscape, “as long as the seed value is 9 or fewer characters.” That qualification is narrower than the later Bedrock 1.18.30 release notes’ statement about 64-bit seeds. The two statements come from different official documentation contexts, so do not treat the nine-character limit as a universal current rule or assume that the later notes guarantee identical individual features.

What to compare when worlds do not match
Check the inputs and the comparison itself before attributing a difference to Java versus Bedrock. Mojang’s documentation establishes seed handling and version-era generation changes as relevant; it does not promise that matching everything will make every generated feature identical.
- Confirm the exact seed. Compare every character, including a leading minus sign and any letters. Text inputs can be interpreted by the game, so a difference in the entered string can mean the worlds are not using the same seed input.
- Record edition and full game version. “Minecraft” alone is not enough: note whether each world is Java or Bedrock and the complete version number shown by the game.
- Compare the same coordinates. A visual comparison from different positions can make matching terrain appear different. Record coordinates and compare the same location in both worlds.
- Specify what should match. Separate broad terrain or landscape from biome placement, spawn location, caves, structures, and other individual features. Evidence of landscape parity is not proof that every feature is guaranteed to match.
- Check world-generation changes. Note custom generation settings or add-ons that could affect a world before concluding that the edition alone explains the difference.
How close is Java–Bedrock parity?
Mojang’s stated direction has been to bring the editions closer, not to promise perfect identity. In the same January 2022 Q&A, gameplay developer Pouya said: “Typically when developing new features, Java and Bedrock devs work side-by-side to be as close as possible to parity from the get-go!” That describes a development approach, not a guarantee for every feature, seed, or version.

The most accurate expectation is therefore qualified: the editions support increasingly compatible seed use and much closer landscape parity than before the 1.18-era changes, but an identical seed is not sufficient evidence that every generated detail must match. For exact results, compare the same seed input, edition-specific version, settings, coordinates, and type of feature.
