Choose Java Edition if you play on Windows, macOS, or Linux and want community mods, custom servers, or access to older released versions. Choose Bedrock Edition if you play on a console or mobile device, prefer controller or touch input, or need to join friends playing Bedrock on other supported platforms. The key for multiplayer is simple: you and your friends need the same edition.
Can Java and Bedrock players play together?
No. Java and Bedrock have separate standard multiplayer ecosystems, so a Java player cannot join a standard Bedrock hosted game, or vice versa. Before choosing an edition for multiplayer, ask friends which one they use and match it. The same rule applies to Realms: Java Realms and Bedrock Realms are separate. Minecraft’s edition comparison and its Realms page describe the separate offerings.
Players on different supported devices can play together when they are all using Bedrock. Java multiplayer is for Java players on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Check the current platform and service requirements for your specific device before setting up a shared game.
How do Java and Bedrock compare?
| What matters | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Supported devices | Windows, macOS, and Linux. | Windows and supported consoles and mobile devices; availability depends on the platform. Check the current official PC listing and Minecraft platform information. |
| Playing with friends | Plays with other Java players. | Cross-play with players on supported Bedrock platforms. |
| Customization | Broad community mod ecosystem and custom servers. | Marketplace content and add-ons, including add-ons that change world content. |
| Input and local play | The official PC comparison does not list native controller support. | Controller and touch support; split-screen is available on consoles. |
| Versions and testing | Offers snapshots and selection among released versions. | Uses preview or beta channels alongside the stable version. |
| Hosted worlds | Java Realms. | Bedrock Realms and Realms Plus. |
These distinctions are described in Minecraft’s Java-versus-Bedrock comparison. Platform availability, requirements, and service details can change; consult the current official pages for your region and device.

Choose Java if mods, servers, or older versions matter most
- You want community mods. Java has a broad third-party mod ecosystem. Mods can alter gameplay, but Minecraft Support does not assist with problems arising from mod use; see Minecraft Help’s Java Edition support guidance.
- You want custom servers. Java is a natural fit if the server community you want to join runs Java. Confirm the server’s edition and version before connecting.
- You want to select older released versions or try snapshots. Java provides those options. Testing builds may not behave like the stable release, so back up worlds before opening them in a snapshot.
- You play on a computer. Java is supported on Windows, macOS, and Linux. If your friends play on Bedrock, however, Java’s computer support does not make the editions compatible.
Choose Bedrock if you need cross-device play or controller input
- Your group uses different kinds of devices. Bedrock supports cross-play across supported Bedrock platforms, including consoles and mobile as well as Windows. Every player still needs Bedrock.
- You want controller or touch controls. Bedrock supports both, making it the more suitable choice for console and mobile play.
- You want console couch play. Console split-screen is available in Bedrock.
- You prefer built-in content options. Bedrock offers Marketplace content and add-ons. Minecraft Help explains how to get started with add-ons.
Which edition should you buy on PC?
The official Minecraft PC store currently presents Java and Bedrock together as a bundle. That makes the PC choice less about selecting one edition at checkout and more about which one fits your friends, preferred features, and intended use. Review the live PC store listing for current purchase terms, supported devices, and requirements before buying.
If you are buying for a console or phone, check the store listing for that particular platform instead. The PC bundle should not be taken to mean that Java is available on consoles or mobile.

Check these details before starting multiplayer
- Ask each friend whether they play Java or Bedrock.
- Confirm that everyone’s device supports the edition your group plans to use.
- For a hosted world, choose the matching Java Realm or Bedrock Realm; neither bridges the two editions.
- For console play, check whether your platform requires a separate subscription for online multiplayer. Requirements vary by console and may change.
- If you plan to test snapshots, previews, or betas, back up worlds first and use the stable version for ordinary play.
