Ethereum is a programmable network for smart contracts and decentralized applications; its native asset, ether (ETH), pays network fees and supports staking. They use different consensus and supply rules, so neither is a universal winner: the better fit depends on whether you value Bitcoin’s narrower monetary design or Ethereum’s broader application platform.
What is the difference between Bitcoin and Ethereum?
Both networks use blockchains, but they were built around different priorities. Bitcoin focuses on transferring value without a central operator. Ethereum is designed to run programs on-chain, enabling applications such as lending, trading, games, and digital collectibles. Ether is the asset used to pay for transactions and smart-contract activity on Ethereum. Ethereum.org’s comparison describes the networks’ differing design, purpose, and capabilities.
Bitcoin is often called “digital gold,” while Ethereum is sometimes framed as a programmable settlement platform. These are shorthand descriptions of their design and common uses, not guarantees of economic performance. Both can be used to transfer or hold value, and neither label predicts future value.
| Comparison | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Peer-to-peer digital currency; often viewed as a scarce store of value | Programmable network for applications and settlement |
| Consensus | Proof of work: miners compete to add blocks | Proof of stake: validators stake ETH to participate |
| Supply design | Predetermined issuance with an eventual 21 million BTC limit | No fixed supply cap in Ethereum.org’s comparison; issuance and activity-linked burning both affect net supply |
| Security model | Accumulated proof of work and transaction confirmation depth | Staked capital, validator incentives, finality, and slashing |
| Key trade-off | Narrower base-layer function and electricity-intensive mining | Broader programmability, with greater protocol complexity and staking-related risks |
How do Bitcoin and Ethereum differ in their uses?
Bitcoin: value transfer with a narrower base-layer role
Bitcoin’s design centers on peer-to-peer value transfer. Its limited scripting supports a more focused range of base-layer functions than Ethereum’s general-purpose smart contracts. That narrower role can appeal to people who prioritize a simple monetary network, but it is not the same thing as proving that bitcoin will retain or increase in value.

Ethereum: applications powered by smart contracts
Ethereum lets developers deploy programs called smart contracts, which can coordinate transactions and application rules without relying on a single operator. Users pay transaction fees in ETH to interact with those programs. This flexibility supports a wider variety of on-chain activity, but applications and the network’s more complex design introduce additional things to understand and assess.
Why does Bitcoin have a supply cap but Ethereum does not?
Bitcoin’s protocol rules set an eventual limit of 21 million BTC. New bitcoin issuance is predetermined and declines over time. The cap is a protocol supply rule; it does not determine bitcoin’s market price or guarantee demand.

Ethereum does not have a fixed maximum supply in the cited Ethereum.org comparison. ETH is issued to validators in relation to staked ETH, while a portion of transaction fees is burned in relation to network activity. As a result, net supply can rise or fall depending on issuance and burning. It is inaccurate to call ETH fixed-cap, but the absence of a cap does not mean its supply must always increase.
A proposed change called EIP-8363, “Tapered Issuance Burn”, would require a hard fork and is not an activated supply policy. The proposal reports that, over the year ending July 31, 2026, MEV-Boost relays paid proposers about 72,600 ETH across 2.42 million blocks—an average of 0.030 ETH per block. It also estimates annual consensus issuance of about 1,054,000 ETH at the staked base specified in the proposal. These are proposal-context calculations, not guaranteed staking yields or permanent issuance rates.

How do Bitcoin and Ethereum secure transactions?
Bitcoin: proof of work and confirmation depth
Bitcoin miners use computing power to compete to add blocks. Full nodes independently check blocks against Bitcoin’s consensus rules. Rewriting a transaction’s history requires replacing the accumulated proof of work, so each additional block built on a transaction increases the work an attacker would need to overcome. Bitcoin documentation explains this relationship between chain depth and the cost of altering past transactions: Bitcoin Developer Documentation.
Bitcoin confirmation confidence is therefore probabilistic, not an instantaneous guarantee. Six confirmations is a common rule of thumb, not a universal settlement time or a promise that every threat has been eliminated.

Ethereum: proof of stake, finality, and slashing
Ethereum replaced miners with validators who stake ETH. Validators help propose and attest to blocks, and dishonest behavior covered by protocol penalties can put their staked ETH at risk. Ethereum.org says finality often occurs around 15 minutes; this is a description of typical operation, not a guaranteed completion time for every transaction. See Ethereum’s proof-of-stake documentation.
Why neither model is categorically safer
These systems rely on different security assumptions, so a simple “safer” verdict is not established by the consensus design alone. Bitcoin’s proof-of-work relies on accumulated work and has trade-offs that include electricity use and dependence on mining hardware and pools. Ethereum’s proof-of-stake uses economic penalties, but is more complex and can face concentration concerns when staking providers hold a large share of stake. Ethereum.org discusses these proof-of-work and proof-of-stake trade-offs in its consensus-mechanisms documentation.

Which network uses more energy?
Bitcoin continues to use proof-of-work mining, which consumes electricity for miners’ computation. Ethereum moved from proof of work to proof of stake in 2022. Ethereum.org says that transition reduced Ethereum’s energy consumption by more than 99 percent. The comparison is about the effect of Ethereum’s consensus transition; it does not provide a current, directly comparable annual energy total for both networks.
Which is faster or cheaper for payments?
There is no durable single-number answer based on transaction speed, throughput, or fees. Fees can rise during congestion, and a transaction’s confirmation or finality is not the same measure as a network’s theoretical transaction capacity. Ethereum activity may take place on layer-2 networks, while Bitcoin has the Lightning Network; comparing only base-layer figures can miss those differences.
An IMF Working Paper published in September 2025 cautions that measurements are not always directly comparable because Bitcoin and Ethereum have different use cases, and network fees can spike under congestion. The paper’s views are its author’s and do not necessarily represent the IMF’s management or Executive Board. See IMF Working Paper WP/25/186.
How should you compare Bitcoin and Ethereum?
- For a narrower monetary design: Bitcoin’s main distinction is its peer-to-peer currency focus and predetermined issuance capped at 21 million BTC.
- For on-chain applications: Ethereum’s smart contracts enable a broader range of programs, with ETH used for fees and staking.
- For supply policy: Bitcoin has a fixed eventual limit; Ethereum’s net supply reflects both issuance and burning.
- For security assumptions: Bitcoin relies on proof-of-work and confirmation depth; Ethereum relies on staked capital, validator incentives, finality, and slashing.
- For performance and fees: Compare the particular transaction route and scaling layer, not a timeless headline number.
This is a protocol comparison, not an investment recommendation. It does not establish which asset is a better investment, predict prices, or rank the networks’ overall safety.
