They can take over some jobs, but a mode label does not mean the appliance matches a dedicated tool’s cooking method, capacity, or results. Check the exact model’s manual before using a bowl, basket, lid, or accessory for a particular task.
How multi-function kitchen appliances work
The controls select a cooking mode, while the appliance’s hardware creates the conditions for it. A preset may choose a time and temperature or run a programmed sequence; it is a convenience, not a substitute for the model’s instructions or food-safety guidance.
Air-fry mode circulates hot air
An air fryer uses a fan to circulate hot air around food placed on an exposed tray or in a perforated basket. This convection-like process can brown and crisp surfaces with little or no added oil, but it is not deep frying: the food is not submerged in hot oil. KitchenAid explains how air frying works.
Multi-cookers use different hardware arrangements
“Multi-cooker” describes a category, not one standard design. The Instant Pot Duo Crisp 6QT, for example, uses interchangeable lids for pressure cooking and air frying. The Tefal Multicook Actifry MY741C40 uses a top heating element for air-fry programs and a bottom element for multicook programs. Some of its programs use the heaters at different stages, rather than simultaneously.

Countertop oven combinations add oven-style modes
An air-fryer toaster oven combines fan-assisted air frying with oven-style functions. Instant Pot lists air fry, bake, broil, roast, toast, rotisserie, reheat, dehydrate, proof, and slow cook for its Omni Plus 18L. That is this model’s advertised feature set, not a list that applies to every countertop oven.
What these appliances can’t necessarily replace
One cooking method is not equivalent to another
Air frying uses circulating hot air; deep frying uses food submerged in oil. Pressure cooking, slow cooking, steaming, and dry-heat roasting also create different cooking conditions. A device may offer several modes, but that does not make their methods or results interchangeable. KitchenAid compares air frying with oven cooking.

A countertop appliance may not match an oven’s capacity
KitchenAid notes that an air fryer generally cooks one dish at a time, while a full-size oven can accommodate multiple dishes or larger portions. Compare usable space and batch size—not just the number of advertised modes—when deciding whether a countertop appliance can handle a meal you currently make in a range or wall oven.
Bowls and accessories may not transfer to other appliances
For the Tefal MY741C40, the manufacturer says the bowl is designed for that appliance and cannot be used on a hob or in an oven. It also advises using the included bowl or a replacement for that model; compatibility with other brands is not guaranteed. These are model-specific restrictions, so consult the accessory instructions for any other appliance rather than assuming parts cross-fit.

Modes may require different configurations
More modes do not mean every function can run at once. The Instant Pot Duo Crisp changes lids between pressure cooking and air frying; the Tefal example uses its top and bottom heaters at different stages for certain programs. The hardware and its configuration determine what the appliance can do at a given time.
The manual sets the operating limits
Follow the instructions for the exact model, including rules for filling, placement, accessories, and switching between modes. For example, a KitchenAid multi-cooker manual says to cook only in the removable container, not to fill above the Max Fill line, and to check food temperature after a power interruption. Those directions apply to the covered appliance; they are not universal rules for every multi-cooker.

How to compare appliances for the job you need
- Cooking method: Identify the specific jobs you need—such as pressure cooking, slow cooking, steaming, air frying, baking, toasting, or roasting—and confirm that the model explicitly supports them.
- Capacity and batch size: Consider usable cooking space, basket or tray shape, portion count, and whether you need to prepare multiple dishes together.
- Hardware: Check whether modes require one lid or interchangeable lids, and note the heating elements, fan, trays, and baskets involved.
- Vessel and accessory compatibility: Confirm where each part can be used and cleaned, and whether replacement bowls or racks must be made for that model.
- Operating and safety instructions: Look for max-fill marks, placement and clearance requirements, cleaning directions, and any sequence required to change lids or insert accessories.
Choose based on the tasks and constraints that matter in your kitchen, not a function count alone. Before relying on a mode or accessory for a specific use, check the instructions for the exact model and regional version.
