The right USB-C charger wattage depends on your iPhone model and whether you charge by cable or MagSafe. For wired fast charging, Apple’s current guidance calls for at least 20W for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, 40W for iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, and a compatible 60W-capable AVS adapter with a 60W-rated cable for the faster charging supported by iPhone 18 Pro models. Older iPhones have different requirements, so check Apple’s guidance for your exact model.
What wattage charger does your iPhone need?
These are Apple’s current wired fast-charge recommendations. They are adapter requirements for the stated fast-charge targets—not promises that the phone will continuously draw that wattage.

Apple’s fast-charge instructions were published September 18, 2026. The stated times are “around” estimates, not guarantees: Apple says results vary with the adapter, settings, usage and environmental conditions, and notes that its tests use preproduction devices. Is a 20W charger enough for your iPhone?
It depends on the model and the charging target. A 20W USB-C adapter meets Apple’s listed wired fast-charge recommendation for iPhone 17e and iPhone Air, and Apple identifies 20W as the minimum for iPhone 12, iPhone SE (3rd generation) and later in its adapter guide. For iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, Apple’s stated wired fast-charge setup uses 40W or more. For iPhone 18 Pro models’ faster wired charging, wattage alone is not enough: the setup needs AVS and a 60W-rated cable.

A 20W adapter can still charge a model whose fast-charge recommendation is higher; it simply does not match the higher-wattage setup Apple specifies for that fast-charge target. The phone, adapter and cable negotiate a charging connection, and the phone draws power according to its design and the conditions in use.
Does a higher-wattage USB-C adapter charge an iPhone faster?
Not automatically. The wattage printed on an adapter describes its maximum available output under supported conditions; it is not the amount the iPhone is guaranteed to receive. Actual charging depends on the iPhone’s supported charging design, adapter protocol, cable, battery state, settings, activity and temperature. A higher-capacity compatible adapter is safe to use within Apple’s recommendations, but it does not force the iPhone to draw more power than it supports.

Apple says an iPhone can be charged with an Apple USB power adapter for an iPad or Mac notebook, and specifically notes that a Mac laptop’s higher-wattage USB-C adapter can be used with iPhone. For iPhone 15 and later, Apple says a USB-C-standard cable and adapter, including USB Power Delivery, can be used. The included cable supports charging; its USB 2 data-speed limit is a separate matter from its charging role. Why protocol and cable specs matter
For iPhone 18 Pro’s faster wired charging, Apple specifies a 60W-capable adapter with AVS and a cable rated for at least 60W. For third-party adapters intended for the iPhone 17 series and Air, Apple’s adapter guidance lists USB-C output and 40W continuous sustained power, with up to 60W maximum and supported output voltage/current profiles that include AVS options. Do not assume that two adapters with the same headline wattage support the same charging protocol or target. Check the product’s USB Power Delivery and AVS specifications, and the cable’s rated power, against Apple’s guidance.

What charger do you need for MagSafe?
MagSafe is wireless charging, so its adapter recommendations differ from wired USB-C fast charging. Apple’s current guidance says:
- iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPhone Air: Use a MagSafe Charger with an Apple 30W-or-higher USB-C adapter or a comparable USB Power Delivery adapter for wireless fast charging.
- iPhone 15 and earlier: Apple says MagSafe can provide up to 15W wireless fast charging with a MagSafe Charger and a 20W-or-higher USB-C Power Delivery adapter.
The MagSafe Charger is the wireless charging puck; the USB-C adapter is the wall power source. Apple’s How to use your MagSafe Charger with iPhone, published October 1, 2026, has the current compatibility details. These MagSafe recommendations should not be substituted for the wired adapter thresholds above.

How to choose a charger for your setup
- Identify the exact iPhone model. Use Apple’s model-specific recommendation rather than applying one wattage to every iPhone.
- Choose wired or MagSafe charging. The adapter requirements differ; for MagSafe, account for both the puck and its wall adapter.
- Check the adapter’s supported output. Confirm USB-C and USB Power Delivery compatibility. For iPhone 18 Pro’s faster wired charging, verify AVS support and 60W capability—not just the headline wattage.
- Check the cable. For iPhone 18 Pro’s faster wired setup, use a cable rated for at least 60W. For other models, use a cable compatible with the selected charging setup.
- Compare the recommendation with what you own. A compatible higher-wattage Apple iPad or Mac USB-C adapter can also charge an iPhone; the phone determines how much power it uses.
Charging can slow or fast charging can stop working when conditions are too cold or too hot. Apple’s wording is direct: “Fast charging might not work in conditions that are too cold or too hot.”
