Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor most AirPods problems, try reconnecting and checking charging before a factory reset. A restart, forgetting (unpairing) AirPods, and resetting them are different actions; the correct factory-reset gesture also depends on your AirPods generation and case. Identify your model first, then follow the matching steps below.
Choose the least disruptive fix first
A restart refreshes the AirPods without using the factory-reset procedure. Forgetting or unpairing removes the saved Bluetooth pairing from a device. A factory reset is a more complete step; it clears custom AirPods settings, so you may need to restore them after pairing again.
- Check for updates. Install available system updates on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac paired with your AirPods.
- Check that both AirPods charge. Put them in the case and confirm both are charging.
- Check Bluetooth and select the AirPods. Make sure Bluetooth is on, then try choosing the AirPods as the audio output.
- Pair again if needed. If they still will not connect, use the pairing flow for your model.
- Reset only if simpler steps fail. Follow the model-specific procedure below, then reconnect using the device’s on-screen instructions.
Apple’s connection guidance recommends updating the paired device, checking that both AirPods charge, checking Bluetooth, selecting the AirPods, and trying to pair again before resetting: Apple’s connection troubleshooting steps.
Identify your AirPods and case control
Do not assume every charging case has the same reset control. AirPods 1, 2, and 3 and AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use a setup button on the back of the case. AirPods 4 and AirPods Pro 3 use taps on the front of the case. AirPods Max uses its Digital Crown and listening-mode button. If you are unsure which model you have, use Apple’s AirPods Support page to identify it before proceeding.

Restart AirPods without factory-resetting them
AirPods and AirPods Pro
Put both AirPods in their case and close the lid for at least 10 seconds. This is a restart, not a factory reset. Apple’s restart, unpair, or reset guide provides the model-specific instructions.
AirPods Max
Hold the Digital Crown and listening-mode button together until the status light flashes amber, at about 10 seconds, then release immediately. Continuing to hold for longer than around 10 seconds resets AirPods Max to factory settings, so do not keep holding if you only intend to restart them. See Apple’s AirPods Max instructions.

Factory-reset AirPods or AirPods Pro
For all models below, Apple’s procedure begins by putting the AirPods in their case, closing the lid, and waiting 30 seconds. If they appear in Bluetooth settings on a paired iPhone or iPad, forget them there before continuing. After the reset, follow the device’s instructions to reconnect. A successful reset is indicated by the status light flashing amber and then white.
AirPods 1, 2, or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2
- Open the case lid.
- Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white.
- Reconnect the AirPods using the on-screen instructions on your device.
AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3
- Open the case lid.
- Double-tap the front of the case three times, timing each tap to the status-light state as described in Apple’s instructions. Continue until the light flashes amber and then white.
- Reconnect using the on-screen instructions on your device.
These cases use a front-of-case tap sequence, not the rear setup-button hold used by older cases. Follow Apple’s AirPods and AirPods Pro reset instructions for the tap timing and light cues.

If the status light does not flash white
Do not guess at a different gesture or keep repeating an unsuitable button sequence. Use Apple’s model-specific reset troubleshooting for the procedure to follow when the light does not flash white.

If your AirPods won’t charge
Check the charging setup before treating a charging problem as a reset problem. Apple recommends charging the AirPods and case for at least 15 minutes, then checking the power source and connections.
- Make sure the cable is firmly connected to the case and power adapter, and that the adapter is plugged into a working power source.
- If you charge wirelessly and the status light does not turn on, reposition the case. If that does not help, connect a compatible cable and adapter.
- Use a Lightning or USB-C cable as appropriate for your charging-case model; the connector is not universal across cases.
- Check the case charging port for debris and clean it if necessary.
See Apple’s charging troubleshooting steps. If you need a cable, identify the case’s connector first rather than assuming one cable fits every model.
