Focus or select the item you want to act on, then press the Menu key to open its context menu. Use the arrow keys to move through the options and press Enter to choose one. If your keyboard has no Menu key, or the app does not respond to it, press Shift+F10.
What does the Menu key do?
The Menu key opens a context menu for the currently focused or selected item in applications that support it. A context menu offers actions relevant to that item, such as commands for a selected file or a control in an app. The key does not open a universal menu: what appears depends on the item and application.
How to use the Menu key

Use the keyboard or mouse to focus or select the file, control, or other item you want to work with. The context menu applies to that item.

Press the Menu key. If the app supports it, its context menu opens.

Press the up or down arrow key to move through the menu options, then press Enter to activate the highlighted command.

Where is the Menu key?
On many Windows keyboards, the Menu key is between the right Alt and right Ctrl keys. It may be marked with a menu symbol or a context-menu icon. Keyboard layouts vary, and some newer keyboards do not have a dedicated Menu key.
What to use if your keyboard has no Menu key
With the intended item focused or selected, press Shift+F10. Microsoft documents this as a shortcut for displaying the context menu of the selected item. It is the practical alternative when a dedicated key is missing or does not work in your app. Shortcut behavior can vary among applications.

Some newer Windows 11 keyboards replace the Context Menu key with a Copilot key. Do not assume that the Copilot key has the same function or a universal remapping; check the keyboard layout and the device’s current settings.

F10 has a different purpose: in an active app, it can activate the menu bar. To open the context menu for a selected item, use the Menu key or Shift+F10. The exact response to shortcuts may differ between apps.
