A console’s CPU handles game logic and frame preparation, its GPU renders images and effects, memory gives running games working space, and storage keeps installed games and feeds data to the system. Those specs help explain what a console can do, but they do not predict how a particular game will look or run: developers make title-specific choices about resolution, frame rate, visual effects, and optimization.

What each console component does

CPU: game logic and frame preparation

The CPU, or central processing unit, executes program instructions. In a game, that can include world simulation, character and object behavior, game rules, and coordinating work that needs to be ready for each frame. CPU capability can affect how much simulation a game can run and how consistently it prepares frames, but a core count or clock speed alone does not establish a game’s frame rate. Architecture, software optimization, workload, and scheduling matter too.

For example, Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox Series X technical article lists an eight-core Zen 2 CPU at 3.8 GHz, or 3.6 GHz with simultaneous multithreading. Sony’s PS5 CFI-21XX manual lists an eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU. These are published specifications for the named hardware, not a direct cross-console performance test.

GPU: image rendering and visual effects

The GPU, or graphics processing unit, renders a game’s images. Its work includes drawing geometry, shading surfaces, and producing lighting and other visual effects. More graphics capability can give developers room to target higher resolutions, add demanding effects, or maintain a frame-rate target with more headroom. Those goals compete for resources: rendering more pixels or enabling effects can require trade-offs elsewhere.

Sony’s PS5 architecture article describes how additional GPU power can support higher resolution and explains ray tracing as simulating how light moves and bounces from surfaces. Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox article describes the Series X’s custom RDNA 2 GPU and hardware-accelerated ray tracing. These are platform capabilities, not proof that every game uses the features or delivers the same visual result.

A teraflop figure is a theoretical measure associated with compute throughput, not a universal picture-quality or gaming-performance score. GPU architecture, memory behavior, software, game engine, resolution, and visual settings all affect what a game actually delivers.

Memory: working space while games run

System memory (RAM) is temporary working space for the console and running software. Games use it for active program state and data they need to access while operating. It is different from storage: installed games remain on an SSD or flash storage when the console is off, while RAM serves as working space during operation.

Capacity is only part of a memory specification. Bandwidth describes how quickly data can move between memory and processors, and manufacturers may divide or reserve memory for system software. That makes headline capacities an imperfect basis for comparing platforms. Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox Series X article lists 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, split into portions with different published bandwidth figures. Sony’s PS5 CFI-21XX manual lists 16 GB of GDDR6. Nintendo’s US Switch 2 specifications do not state system-memory capacity; the public page lists a custom NVIDIA processor and 256 GB of UFS internal storage.

Storage: installed games, loading, and asset streaming

Storage holds installed games and other files. Capacity primarily affects how many games and files you can keep installed at once. Storage speed and the console’s input/output (I/O) path can also affect how quickly game data is read, loading times, and how a game streams assets as you move through its world. These are related but distinct benefits: a larger drive gives you more room; a faster drive can improve data access when the game and platform make use of it.

PlayStation’s 2020 PS5 architecture article describes the console’s SSD and custom I/O as designed to reduce loading barriers and support fast asset streaming. That is a design goal, not a promise of zero loading in every game. Microsoft’s 2020 Series X article lists a 1 TB custom NVMe SSD and I/O throughput of 2.4 GB/s raw or 4.8 GB/s compressed using custom hardware.

Current model capacities differ. Sony’s CFI-21XX manual lists an 825 GB or 1 TB custom SSD depending on model; Microsoft’s current Xbox Series X page describes 1 TB and 2 TB SSD choices. Nintendo lists 256 GB of UFS storage for Switch 2 and notes that some internal storage is reserved for system use. Check the exact model and available space rather than assuming the full advertised capacity is available for games.

How to read performance claims

Resolution is the number of pixels rendered, while frame rate is the number of images shown each second. Higher resolution can make an image more detailed; a higher frame rate can make motion and input response feel smoother. A game may trade resolution, effects, or frame rate against one another, depending on its settings and design.

A console’s supported display output is not a promise that every game renders at that resolution and frame rate simultaneously. Microsoft’s 2020 Series X article gives a platform target of 4K at 60 frames per second and support for up to 120 FPS, while noting that resolution and frame rate are creative decisions for game developers. Nintendo’s Switch 2 page lists TV output modes including up to 4K at 60 fps and 120 fps at selected lower resolutions. Those output modes describe what the system supports, not the native rendering mode of every game.

For a game you care about, look for its own graphics or performance modes and credible testing of that exact title. Also check whether your display supports the mode you want. A supported feature such as ray tracing is useful context, but you still need to know whether the game implements it and what trade-offs accompany it.

Published specifications for current console examples

Platform and source Published details relevant to gaming How to interpret them
PlayStation 5 CFI-21XX manual Eight-core, 16-thread Zen 2 CPU; 10 TFLOPS RDNA-based GPU; 16 GB GDDR6; 825 GB or 1 TB custom SSD depending on model; M.2 expansion connector. These figures apply to the identified model family. Sony’s manual says information may change without notice.
Xbox Series X official materials The 2020 Xbox Wire technical article lists an eight-core Zen 2 CPU, custom RDNA 2 GPU, 16 GB GDDR6 with a published bandwidth split, and a 1 TB custom NVMe SSD. The current Xbox page describes 1 TB and 2 TB SSD choices. The technical article dates to 2020; do not treat its 1 TB drive figure as applying to every current Series X capacity option.
Nintendo Switch 2 US specifications Custom NVIDIA processor; 256 GB UFS internal storage; microSD Express slot supporting cards up to 2 TB; supported display-output modes. The public page does not state system-memory capacity. Some internal storage is reserved for system use.

The figures above are manufacturer-published specifications, not standardized independent benchmarks. For example, Sony’s manual identifies 10 TFLOPS for the PS5 CFI-21XX GPU, while Microsoft’s 2020 Xbox article lists 12 TFLOPS for Series X. That difference alone cannot establish which console performs better in a particular game.

What to compare when choosing a console

  • Game-specific modes: Check the developer’s stated resolution and frame-rate options, and independent testing of the title if available.
  • Visual features: Find out whether a game uses effects such as ray tracing and what it trades for them.
  • CPU and GPU in context: Treat core counts, clock speeds, and teraflops as clues, not stand-alone rankings.
  • Memory configuration: Consider bandwidth and system reservations as well as capacity; platforms do not necessarily allocate memory in the same way.
  • Storage and expansion: Compare the exact model’s capacity, the free space you have, observed loading behavior in games you play, and compatible expansion options.
  • Your setup and habits: The games you want, handheld or docked play, your display, and whether you mind deleting and reinstalling titles can matter more than a headline hardware number.

Check compatibility before expanding storage

PS5: qualifying M.2 SSDs

Sony’s PS5 M.2 SSD support guidance says a commercially available M.2 SSD can be installed if it meets the required specifications. M.2 storage can hold PS5 game data. A PS5 game stored on USB extended storage must be moved back to console storage or M.2 SSD storage to play. Check Sony’s current capacity, interface, speed, and heatsink requirements before choosing a drive; not every M.2 NVMe product qualifies.

Switch 2: microSD Express cards

Nintendo’s Switch 2 specifications list a microSD Express card slot that supports cards up to 2 TB. Nintendo says cards that are not compatible with microSD Express can only be used to copy screenshots and videos from Nintendo Switch. An older microSD card should not be assumed to work as Switch 2 game-storage expansion.
