For most early Survival-mode homes, cobblestone or another readily available stone makes a practical main shell. Add wood for warmth and structure, and glass for windows. This combination balances gathering effort, fire safety, and appearance without making a starter house harder to build than it needs to be.
How to choose house materials
Three considerations matter most: how easily you can gather a block, how it holds up to hazards, and how you want the finished house to look. The Minecraft Wiki’s building-material guide treats durability as more than toughness: hardness, blast resistance, and flammability all affect a material’s usefulness. For an ordinary home, weigh those factors against the house’s location and purpose rather than aiming for maximum resistance everywhere.
- Gathering effort: Use nearby, common materials for a first home. Cobblestone is a practical shell; save blocks that require extra processing or access to another dimension for later.
- Hazards: Stone and cobblestone are nonflammable. Wood is flammable, so consider nearby fire sources and where you place it.
- Appearance: A small palette of contrasting textures and colors usually gives a house more character than covering every surface with one block. The best combination is a matter of taste.
How common house materials compare
| Material | Why it works | Trade-offs and good uses |
|---|---|---|
| Cobblestone | Common, renewable, and relatively easy to gather; a practical nonflammable shell with reasonable explosion resistance. | Its rough texture suits rustic or fortified builds. Add smoother stone or other accents if you want a more finished look. See the building-material guide and safe-home tutorial. |
| Stone | Abundant, nonflammable, and relatively resistant to explosions. | Getting regular stone usually means processing cobblestone, unless you mine it with Silk Touch. Use it when you want a smoother stone finish. Minecraft Wiki building-material guide. |
| Stone bricks or bricks | Offer a more finished appearance while retaining stone-like defensive utility. Minecraft’s official article says bricks have the same blast resistance as other types of stone. | They take more collection or crafting effort than a basic cobblestone shell. Consider them for an established home or as accents. Minecraft: Block of the Week — Bricks. |
| Wood planks | Renewable by replanting trees, easy to shape, and available in multiple palettes. | Wood can burn and fire can spread. Keep it away from lava and other likely ignition sources; use stone around fireplaces or similar hazards. Building-material guide and safe-home tutorial. |
| Glass | Lets light and visibility into a house while giving the exterior a lighter look. | Use it for windows, not as the protective core of the building. Scholastic’s construction-handbook description gives glass panes for windows as an example of a building material. Scholastic handbook page. |
| Obsidian | An option when resisting explosions is the priority. | Slow and difficult to gather and build with, making it excessive for most starter homes. Reserve it for a build where its defensive role justifies the effort. Building-material guide and safe-home tutorial. |
| Nether blocks | Can provide a distinctive palette; the material guide identifies Nether wood as nonflammable. | Many choices require access to the Nether, so they are generally poor defaults for a first house. Building-material guide. |
What to build at each stage
First night: get enclosed quickly
When time is short, prioritize a fast, enclosed shelter using whatever is at hand. A nearby hill or cave can reduce the time spent gathering blocks and building. Upgrade once you can do so safely. The Minecraft Wiki shelter tutorial and safe-home tutorial cover these early priorities.
Starter house: use an accessible stone shell
Build the main walls from cobblestone or stone when available. Wood can add a frame, floors, or roof details if fire risk is manageable; put stone around fireplaces or other likely ignition hazards. Add windows for visibility and use a few contrasting blocks to break up the exterior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Established home: finish the exterior
Once gathering is less urgent, upgrade selected surfaces to stone bricks or bricks for a more polished look. Use other accents for contrast, and keep slow-to-collect materials limited to places where their appearance or defensive role is worthwhile.
Fortified or high-risk build: prioritize resistance deliberately
Favor nonflammable blocks and materials chosen for blast resistance when the location or purpose calls for extra protection. Obsidian is an extreme option: its acquisition and building effort make it a poor default for an ordinary house.

Version and scope
This is a general Survival-mode guide, not a block-by-block specification for a particular build. The Minecraft Wiki tutorials were crawled about 1.3 years before the research timestamp; numeric block properties can be edition- or version-sensitive, so check the current Java or Bedrock edition before relying on a precise value. No ranked block scores or percentages are needed to make the practical choice: start with accessible stone, then adjust for hazards and style.
