Xbox has made a broad commitment to preserve games across four generations and says Project Helix is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Sony has not confirmed whether PS6 will play PS5 or older PlayStation games. Neither platform has published enough detail to promise that every game—or every disc—will work.

What is confirmed about Project Helix?

In a March 11, 2026 Xbox Wire summary of a GDC keynote, Jason Ronald, Xbox vice president of next generation, said: “Project Helix is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games.” He also said Microsoft is “committed to keeping games from four generations of Xbox playable for years to come.” Xbox’s announcement does not provide a Helix compatibility list or identify exactly which games, generations, or formats will be supported.

That makes the commitment meaningful but not a guarantee that every Xbox game will run on Helix. It also does not establish whether Helix will have a disc drive or read existing Xbox discs. Xbox said it plans to send alpha versions of the hardware to developers beginning in 2027; the announcement did not give a retail release date.

Will Xbox Helix play Xbox One and Xbox 360 games?

Xbox’s wording points to a goal of playing games from its console generations, but the announcement does not name Xbox One or Xbox 360 titles individually or promise universal support. For comparison, Xbox’s current Series X|S compatibility information says most Xbox One games are playable, while Xbox 360 and original Xbox support is limited to selected titles. Features vary by game, and Series S is digital-only. Xbox’s current compatibility page illustrates why a generation-wide preservation commitment should not be read as a guarantee for every title or disc.

Has Sony confirmed PS6 backward compatibility?

No. The official Sony materials covered here do not confirm whether PS6 will play PS5 games, PS4 games, or games from older PlayStation generations. That remains unknown—not a confirmed yes or no.

Sony’s previous compatibility statement was about PS4 games on PS5. In October 2020, Sony said more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games were expected to be playable on PS5 at launch. That historical PS4-to-PS5 figure says nothing about PS6. Sony’s PS5 FAQ and PS5 technical overview describe the earlier console, not a PS6 policy.

What does Sony’s 2028 disc announcement mean?

Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that “physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028.” The announcement says this does not affect games already released or releasing before January 2028 in disc format. It concerns production of new-game discs; it does not say whether PS6 will read existing PlayStation discs or support digital PS4 and PS5 libraries. Sony’s announcement is not a PS6 compatibility statement.

How the confirmed information compares

Question Project Helix / Xbox PS6 / PlayStation
Official next-generation statement Xbox says Helix is designed to play Xbox console and PC games and commits to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable for years. (Xbox Wire, March 11, 2026.) No PS6 backward compatibility policy is confirmed in the official Sony materials cited here.
Which earlier generations are named? Xbox refers to four generations, but the cited Helix statement does not give a title-by-title list or specify every supported generation and format. Sony’s cited compatibility materials describe PS4 games on PS5, not PS6.
Is every game guaranteed to work? No. The Helix statement does not promise universal compatibility. Current Series X|S support is selective for older generations. Unknown. Sony has not announced the scope of PS6 compatibility.
Are physical discs covered? Not specified in the Helix announcement; it does not confirm an optical drive or disc support. Not specified for PS6. Sony’s planned end to production of new PlayStation game discs in January 2028 does not settle whether existing discs will work.
Is there a compatibility list? No Helix title-by-title list appears in the cited announcement. No PS6 list or policy appears in the cited Sony materials.

What to conclude if you own a library of older games

For Helix, treat Xbox’s four-generation commitment as a positive platform-level promise, not as confirmation that a particular game, disc, save, accessory, or online feature will carry over. For PS6, wait for Sony to state a policy before assuming PS5 or older games will work. In either case, compatibility details will matter at the level of individual titles and formats—not just the console’s brand or generation.
