If it won’t turn on, check its cable and power source. Use recovery mode only if it powers on but remains stuck during startup, such as on the Apple logo.
First, identify the symptom and your iPad’s buttons
Apple separates a black or frozen screen from an iPad that powers on but gets stuck during startup. The right first step depends on which symptom you have and whether your iPad has a Home button. Apple’s current guidance covers these cases in If your iPad won’t turn on or is frozen.
- Frozen or unresponsive screen: force-restart the iPad.
- It won’t turn on: try a force restart, then check charging if needed.
- It powers on but is stuck on the Apple logo or a red or blue screen: use recovery mode and choose Update.
Look at the front of the iPad to see whether it has a physical Home button. The volume-button sequence is for models without one; don’t use it as a universal restart sequence.
1. Force-restart an iPad without a Home button
- Press and quickly release the volume button closest to the top button.
- Press and quickly release the other volume button.
- Press and hold the top button until the Apple logo appears, then release it.
The first two presses are brief and separate. The final press is the longer hold. This is the force-restart sequence Apple gives for iPads without a Home button.

2. Force-restart an iPad with a Home button
Press and hold the Home button and the top button together until the Apple logo appears, then release both. This sequence is for iPads with a Home button.
3. Try an ordinary restart if the screen responds
If the iPad still responds well enough to use its power-off slider, shut it down normally and turn it back on. If it is frozen or unresponsive, use the force-restart sequence above instead. Apple’s steps are in Restart your iPad.

4. Check the cable and power source if the iPad won’t turn on
Connect the iPad to a USB charging cable—preferably the cable that came with it—and a working USB power adapter or another supported USB power source. If it still won’t charge, try a different cable or adapter. Apple says an iPad that won’t turn on may need up to an hour on charge; that is a troubleshooting instruction, not a guaranteed recovery time. See If your iPad won’t charge for Apple’s charging checks.
Choose a replacement cable or adapter that is compatible with your particular iPad. The connector and appropriate accessory depend on the model; the guidance here does not establish a universal connector or wattage.

5. Use recovery mode only for a startup stall
If the iPad turns on but stays stuck on the Apple logo or a red or blue screen, connect it to a computer and use recovery mode. When the computer offers Update or Restore, choose Update first, as Apple instructs. Recovery mode is a different path from force-restarting a frozen screen.
Prepare the computer
- Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later: open Finder.
- Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier: open iTunes.
- PC: use the latest Apple Devices app or iTunes.
Enter recovery mode and select Update
- Connect the iPad to the computer.
- Use the recovery-mode button sequence that matches the iPad’s Home-button configuration, following Apple’s model-specific instructions.
- When the computer presents the Update or Restore options, choose Update.
- If the software download takes more than 15 minutes and the iPad exits recovery mode, let the download finish, then repeat the recovery-mode steps.
Do not choose Restore as a casual first attempt: Apple’s frozen-iPad instructions direct you to choose Update. If the iPad is accessible before further recovery or service steps, back it up first. Apple supports backups with iCloud or to a computer. A backup may not be possible while the screen is frozen.

6. Update iPadOS after the iPad becomes usable
Once the iPad is responsive, check for an iPadOS update. Apple says updating might fix an issue; it is a possible maintenance step, not a guaranteed cure for a frozen screen. See Update your iPhone or iPad for Apple’s update guidance.

If the correct force restart, charging checks, and applicable recovery-mode Update do not restore operation, the iPad may need service. Contact Apple Support or an appropriate service provider. A freeze alone does not establish that the screen or another specific component is damaged.

Why these are nine checks and steps, not nine separate cures
Apple’s guidance forms a few symptom-based branches rather than nine independently validated fixes. The nine numbered checks and steps in this guide break those branches into practical actions: identify the buttons, use the matching force restart, try a normal restart only if the screen responds, check charging, recover a startup stall with Update, back up when accessible, update iPadOS when usable, and seek service if self-help fails. Apple does not publish a freeze frequency or a success rate for these steps.
