If your browser keeps opening unfamiliar pages, changing your search engine, or showing persistent pop-ups, first check the affected site’s permissions and your browser’s extensions and settings. Those symptoms can point to unwanted software or browser hijacking, but one pop-up alone does not prove your device is infected. Work through the checks below from the browser outward, and escalate to a device scan only if the problem persists.
Identify what is happening before you change anything
Note whether the behavior is limited to one website or happens across many sites, and whether the message appears inside a page, as a desktop notification, or in a new tab during navigation. Also check whether your homepage, startup page, search engine, or extension list changed without your permission. Persistent pop-ups, unfamiliar redirects, and extensions that return after removal are reasons to investigate, not a diagnosis by themselves. Google lists these behaviors among possible signs of unwanted software.
Mozilla describes unauthorized browser-setting changes as search or browser hijacking: “Search hijacking, or browser hijacking, occurs when a third party sneaks files into your computer and alters your browser’s settings without your permission.” Mozilla says unwanted extensions, bundled installers, misleading software, and unreliable downloads can be routes to hijacking. Redirects may lead to ads, sponsored links, or malicious downloads. Mozilla Support explains search hijacking and its possible causes.
Stop pop-ups and redirects tied to one site
If the issue appears only on one site, inspect that site’s permissions first. Remove notification or pop-up permissions you do not recognize, and remove any site from the browser’s pop-up allowlist if you did not intentionally add it. Firefox’s pop-up blocker works with third-party redirect blocking, and its exceptions dialog lets you remove one site or the full allowlist. Mozilla’s Firefox guide covers pop-up settings and exceptions.

Some page content only looks like a separate pop-up window, and some actions you take on a site can open a window despite the blocker. If the alert is a desktop notification, review that site’s notification permission rather than relying only on the pop-up blocker.

For Chrome, use its site settings and pop-up controls to review or remove site access. Google’s unwanted ads and malware guide links to the relevant Chrome settings. In Safari, review the controls for blocking pop-up ads and windows using Apple’s Safari support instructions. Labels and steps can differ by device and browser version.
Review extensions, homepage, and search settings
Remove extensions or add-ons you do not recognize or no longer trust. Then check that your homepage, startup page, and default search engine are the ones you chose. Avoid add-ons and installers from sources you do not trust; some hijackers arrive bundled with other software. Mozilla recommends using reliable add-on sources and removing unwanted add-ons. Mozilla’s browser-hijack guidance explains these checks.

If you use Chrome and its settings appear to have been changed, you can restore the browser’s settings to their original defaults. Google notes that you may need to turn trusted extensions back on afterward. A reset addresses browser settings; it does not by itself prove that unwanted software has been removed from the computer. Google’s Chrome reset instructions describe the process.

Clean up unwanted software on Windows if symptoms persist
If browser-level checks do not resolve the problem, review recently installed programs and uninstall software you do not need. Microsoft distinguishes potentially unwanted apps from malware: a potentially unwanted app is not necessarily malware, though it may display advertising or perform other unwanted actions.
- Uninstall programs you do not recognize or no longer need using Windows’ installed-app controls.
- Update Microsoft Defender Antivirus security intelligence, then run a full scan.
- If the unwanted software persists, consider Microsoft Defender Offline scan, which Microsoft lists as a further option.
See Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance for its recommendations on unwanted apps and scans. A scan is appropriate when there is reason to suspect unwanted software, but no single scan can be promised to resolve every redirect: the cause may instead be a site permission, extension, browser setting, or network issue.
