A California Energy Commission report published in 2021 found average gameplay power of 34–410 watts across the desktops and 21–212 watts across the laptops it tested. Those are study results—not universal ranges or guarantees for current computers. To estimate your own electricity use, compare matched setups or measure them at the wall, then calculate cost using your electricity rate.
How much power do gaming desktops and laptops use?
The available measurements show wide variation within both categories. In its 2021 report, the California Energy Commission reported average gameplay power of 34–410 W for the tested desktops and 21–212 W for the tested laptops. The European gaming energy-efficiency project also found broad variation: its studied desktops averaged 34–410 W during gameplay and its laptops 21–212 W. The surfaced result for that project does not establish a publication date.
These results are useful for showing that gaming systems can differ substantially, not for predicting the draw of a computer you have not measured. The studies cover particular systems and games; they do not establish a single representative benchmark for all current gaming PCs. The California Energy Commission report and European gaming project report are the relevant sources.
Why the comparison depends on what you count
A laptop has a built-in screen, while a desktop gaming setup normally uses a separate monitor. An external display or dock can add to a laptop setup’s draw as well. Therefore, “computer alone” and “complete gaming setup” are different comparisons. Decide which one you want before comparing wattage, and include equivalent equipment on both sides.

- For computer-to-computer comparison: measure the desktop tower and the laptop itself, stating whether the laptop’s built-in screen is on.
- For whole-setup comparison: include the desktop monitor and any external laptop display, dock, or other equipment you use.

What changes a gaming PC’s power draw?
Power use varies with the hardware, game, graphics settings, frame-rate target, and activity state. Comparing a demanding game on one system with a lighter game or different settings on another can make the result misleading. A gameplay number also does not describe idle, sleep, or off-mode use.

For a useful comparison, keep the game, settings, frame-rate target, session length, and included equipment consistent. If you care about more than gaming, record idle or sleep as separate measurements rather than combining them with gameplay.
How to measure your own desktop or laptop
A plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the wall draw of a computer or setup. It helps answer what your equipment uses under your conditions; it is not a universal benchmark, and a brief reading alone does not establish annual consumption. ECMA-383 describes a procedure for measuring desktop and notebook computer power and energy across operating modes. The ECMA-383 standard provides the formal measurement reference.

- Choose the comparison. Decide whether you are measuring each computer or the full setup. Include displays and accessories consistently, and note whether the laptop is using its built-in screen or an external display.
- Match the workload. Run the same game at the same graphics settings and frame-rate target. Use a representative session rather than comparing unlike workloads.
- Measure at the wall. Connect the equipment being counted through a plug-in usage monitor and record its average watts during the session. If useful, measure idle or sleep separately.
- Record time and conditions. Note session length, equipment included, and the activity being measured so the result can be interpreted later.
How to estimate electricity use and cost
Convert average power to energy using the hours you play, then multiply by your own electricity price:
Energy (kWh) = average watts × hours ÷ 1,000
Estimated cost = energy (kWh) × your electricity rate per kWh

For example, if a measured setup averages 200 W for 3 hours, it uses 0.6 kWh for that session (200 × 3 ÷ 1,000). Multiply 0.6 by the per-kWh rate on your bill to estimate the session’s energy cost. To estimate a longer period, use representative hours and a representative average draw; do not treat one short session as a precise forecast of future use.
DOE publishes cost examples based on an 11¢/kWh energy price at federal facilities as of July 2024, a four-year assumed product life, and ENERGY STAR product-list data as of December 2024. Which form factor makes more sense?
Electricity use is one factor, not the whole buying decision. Intel’s manufacturer buying guidance describes laptops as portable and desktops as more modular and upgradeable, with desktops potentially better suited to high-end components and thermal considerations. Those are general form-factor tradeoffs, not independent benchmark results for every machine.
- Consider a laptop if portability is important and you want a computer with its own screen. An external monitor or dock changes the power use of the full setup.
- Consider a desktop if upgradeability and modularity matter more than portability. Include the monitor when comparing its setup with a laptop’s.
- Compare actual energy costs only after matching the workload and using your local electricity rate; a broad category average cannot determine your personal bill.
ENERGY STAR says certified computers use about 30–40% less energy than standard models through efficient components and better energy management while idle.
