Before buying on Prime Day, check the item’s price history where available, read recent reviews for recurring details that matter to you, and inspect the return terms on the exact listing. A deal badge or discount percentage is a prompt to compare—not proof that the price is right or the product suits your needs.
Prime Day 2026 ran June 23–26 and has passed. Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days ran October 6–7, 2026. This checklist applies to future deal events too; event dates and listing terms can change.
Before the event: decide what you actually want to buy
Write down the exact item and configuration
Make a short list of planned purchases before browsing. Record the exact model and, where relevant, size, color, capacity, condition, and seller. A discount on a different configuration is not a like-for-like comparison.
Set your own price ceiling
Choose the highest price you are willing to pay based on your budget and what the item is worth to you. This keeps a large discount badge from turning an unplanned purchase into an apparent bargain.

Save items or set alerts
Amazon describes Lists, Buy Again, deal alerts, and target-price notifications as ways to keep track of products. Features and availability may vary. If you use an alert or optional auto-buy, set a target you chose in advance and confirm the item and seller before a purchase. Amazon describes Alexa for Shopping price alerts and auto-buy at a specified target in its Alexa for Shopping guidance.
At the deal: check whether the price is genuinely attractive
Look beyond the discount badge
Amazon says its reference prices may be a List Price or a Typical Price based on what customers recently paid on Amazon. That explains Amazon’s own comparison, but it does not establish that a deal is the lowest price available at other retailers. Use price history when it is available
On eligible product pages, Amazon says shoppers can view 30-, 90-, and 365-day price histories. The feature and available ranges vary by product and marketplace, so you may not see every view. Amazon says more than 50 million customers have used price history; that is Amazon’s own reported figure, not an independent measurement. Its price-history guidance describes opening the history from a product detail page or asking Alexa for Shopping.
Compare the current price with the history you can see, rather than treating a single past price as a guarantee of future value. Amazon also reported that more than 80% of deals in its most recent Prime Day were at Amazon’s lowest price of the year so far. This is Amazon’s figure about its own event, not an independent audit or a claim that those prices beat every retailer.

Make the comparison like-for-like
When checking another retailer, match the exact model, size, capacity, and included accessories. Include shipping, any membership required to get the price, and add-ons you would need to use the item. Otherwise, the headline price may not reflect what you would actually pay.
Reviews: look for repeated evidence, not a single dramatic opinion
Read a useful sample of recent positive and critical reviews
Search for specific, recurring observations about the features and use case that matter to you: for example, durability, compatibility, sizing, or performance in a particular setting. A cluster of detailed reports is more useful than one striking anecdote or a summary that does not answer your question.

Check the item-specific return conditions
Amazon says free, convenient returns apply to most items delivered in the U.S.; its shopping guidance says the FREE Returns badge identifies qualifying products. “Most” does not mean every item. Before ordering, review the listing and checkout details for:
- The return deadline and whether it differs from the general window you expect.
- Any condition, packaging, or included-accessory requirements.
- Whether return shipping is free or a fee applies.
- Available drop-off or pickup methods.
Amazon’s returns guidance and shopping tips provide general information, but the exact item’s eligibility and terms should guide your decision. These U.S.-focused statements should not be assumed to describe every country, seller, or marketplace.
Confirm the rest of the listing
Before checkout, verify the seller, item condition, delivery estimate, included accessories, and any warranty information shown. These details can change the value of two listings that appear to be for the same product.
Use a final decision check before placing the order
- Need: Does the item solve a need you already identified?
- Price: Is the current price at or below your personal ceiling, and have you checked available history and comparable listings?
- Reviews: Do recent, specific comments address the use case or concern that matters to you?
- Terms: Have you checked the exact seller, condition, delivery, and return conditions?
- Decision: If the price misses your target or reviews and return terms leave a material concern, skip it rather than letting the event deadline decide for you.
Keep the order confirmation and note why the purchase met your price and need criteria. That makes it easier to judge the item against what you expected when it arrives.
