Start with your electricity bill: rising local power demand does not automatically mean your household is paying a higher real-time rate. Most customers pay rates based on seasonal average costs, while some utilities offer time-of-use pricing. Your best options depend on the rate you actually have: use less electricity, shift flexible use only when off-peak rates are cheaper, and check for utility rebates or demand-response programs.

First, find out how your electricity rate works

Wholesale electricity costs can vary over time, and demand contributes to those changes. But that does not mean every household’s retail price rises whenever local demand increases. The U.S. Energy Information Administration says most consumers pay rates based on seasonal average costs; some utilities offer time-of-day pricing (EIA: Electricity prices and factors affecting prices).

Check your bill or utility account for the rate name and how charges are calculated. Look for the per-kilowatt-hour (kWh) energy charge, any time-of-use periods, a monthly fixed charge, and any demand charge. A demand charge, when included, is based on the highest power use (kW) during a defined period; it is different from the total electricity used over a month. Fixed charges generally remain even if you consume less. These distinctions determine whether conservation, shifting use, or reducing a short-lived peak could affect your bill (U.S. Department of Energy: Electricity pricing).

If your utility provides interval data—usage recorded at regular intervals—review it alongside several months of bills. This can help reveal when your household uses electricity and whether that timing matters under your rate.

In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

Reduce the amount of electricity you use

Using fewer kWh can reduce the energy portion of a bill when that charge is based on consumption. Start with the household’s larger or more frequent uses, then consider practical efficiency and conservation measures. The EIA lists efficient products, programmable thermostats, turning off appliances when they are not needed, and utility efficiency programs among the ways consumers can reduce energy use (EIA: Energy efficiency and conservation).

  • Heating and cooling: Review thermostat schedules and avoid conditioning an empty home unnecessarily. A programmable thermostat may help automate a schedule, but compatibility with your heating or cooling equipment and the way your household uses it matter.
  • Appliances: Turn off equipment when it is not needed, and consider energy efficiency when replacing products.
  • Utility programs: Ask whether your utility offers efficiency advice, rebates, or other incentives for eligible equipment. Confirm the product requirements and program terms before buying.

These are ways to reduce consumption, not a guaranteed percentage of savings. The result depends on your starting use, equipment, rate, and program eligibility.

Shift flexible use only when your rate rewards it

Under a time-of-use rate, the price of electricity varies by the hour or season. Check the utility’s exact peak, shoulder, and off-peak windows and the price in each period before changing routines. If the off-peak price is lower, moving a flexible task such as laundry or dishwashing to those hours may reduce its energy charge. Follow appliance instructions and household needs rather than treating every task as movable.

Do not assume that nighttime or weekends are cheaper: schedules are utility- and plan-specific. A rate that does not match when your household uses electricity can cost more, a point also emphasized in Australian government household guidance (Australian Government: Understanding energy bills). The guidance’s comparison tools and rate details are specific to its jurisdiction, so use your own utility’s terms for a local decision.

Ask about demand response and rebates

Some utilities invite customers to reduce electricity use during short periods when the grid is under strain or wholesale prices are high. The U.S. Department of Energy describes demand response as a voluntary, short-term decrease in electricity consumption, generally triggered by compromised grid reliability or high wholesale market prices (U.S. Department of Energy: Demand response).

Depending on the local program, participants may receive a discount, bill credit, or other compensation. Some programs may involve remote control of cooling or heating equipment or water heaters. Ask the utility about eligibility, event alerts, what equipment it can control, opt-out rules, and how compensation is calculated. Participation and payment are subject to the program’s terms; neither is universal.

Compare plans using your own usage

If your utility offers multiple rates or your area allows retail choice, compare estimated total bills using your actual usage pattern—not just the advertised per-kWh rate. Include the following:

  • Peak, shoulder, and off-peak prices and their exact hours
  • Monthly fixed charges and any demand charges
  • Your household’s usage by time of day, if interval data is available
  • Any requirements, such as a smart meter
  • Program eligibility, equipment-control permissions, and compensation

A lower energy price at one time may not offset a higher price during the hours your home uses the most electricity, or a different fixed fee. The best fit depends on local terms and how your household uses power.

Use national price figures only as context

National and state averages describe broad patterns, not the rate or likely savings for an individual home. EIA’s Electric Power Monthly figures reported a 2025 annual average retail electricity price of 13.63 cents per kWh across U.S. customer types and 17.30 cents per kWh for residential customers. The February 2026 data were preliminary. For 2025, the average across all customer types ranged from 35.72 cents per kWh in Hawaii to 8.20 cents per kWh in North Dakota, illustrating geographic variation (EIA: Electric Power Monthly). Your utility’s rate schedule and bill are more useful for choosing what to change.
