For Apple’s 2026 lineup, the standard iPhone is the balanced starting point; Pro models add advanced camera hardware and controls; and Pro Max pairs the top traditional Pro feature set with the largest body and Apple’s strongest battery-life claim. Apple’s current list does not include a new Plus model, so buyers looking for one may need to consider older stock or a different large-screen iPhone.
What iPhone models are available in 2026?
Apple announced iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026, with availability beginning September 18. Its current model-identification and comparison materials also list iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, and iPhone Duo. They do not list a new iPhone 17 Plus or iPhone 18 Plus. A Plus model may still be available from retailers, but check its generation, condition, and local stock rather than assuming it is a current model. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro announcement and its iPhone model identification guide describe the lineup.
The familiar labels are useful shorthand, but they do not guarantee that every size tier exists in each generation. Apple describes iPhone 17e as a 6.1-inch model with one rear camera, iPhone Air as a 6.5-inch device with one rear camera, and iPhone Duo as a foldable with outer and inner displays. These alternatives may better suit buyers whose priorities are lower entry cost, a thin and light design, or a foldable screen than the standard-versus-Pro choice suggests. See Apple’s iPhone comparison page for its current model details.
How to choose between the main iPhone options
| Your priority | Start with | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday use and a balanced feature set | The current standard model, such as iPhone 17 | Local price, storage, and whether a previous-generation deal is substantially cheaper |
| A large display without needing Pro camera features | A Plus model if one is available in your market; otherwise compare iPhone Air or Pro Max only if their trade-offs fit | Actual size, weight, price, and stock; Apple’s current list does not show a new-generation Plus |
| More camera reach and manual control in a smaller traditional Pro body | iPhone 18 Pro | Whether you will use its camera hardware and controls enough to justify the local price |
| The largest traditional iPhone display and Apple’s longest stated playback time | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Carry comfort, local price, and whether the extra size and battery claim matter to you |
| A lower entry cost | iPhone 17e | Its single rear camera and other feature differences from the standard model |
| A thin, light design | iPhone Air | Its single rear camera and the size and feature trade-offs |
| A foldable screen for inner-display use and multitasking | iPhone Duo | Foldable form factor, local availability, and its much higher reported launch price |
Choose the size you can comfortably carry
Apple lists iPhone 18 Pro with a 6.3-inch display and iPhone 18 Pro Max with a 6.9-inch display. Those diagonal measurements are not the viewable screen area; Apple notes that the actual area is smaller. The larger panel can make reading, video, and expansive interfaces more comfortable, but it also means carrying a larger phone. If one-handed use or pocketability is important, handle the models in person if possible rather than deciding from the screen measurement alone. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro specifications list the sizes and measurement qualification.

Pay for Pro cameras only if you will use them
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro’s 48MP Pro Fusion camera system includes Main, Ultra Wide, and Telephoto cameras. Its main camera supports four aperture settings, and the camera app adds controls for aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and a histogram. That extra hardware and control can matter if you want more camera reach or deliberately adjust how a shot is made. If you mainly take casual photos and do not expect to use those controls, the Pro premium may be harder to justify. These are Apple’s product specifications, not a claim of independent comparative testing. Apple’s announcement outlines the camera features.
Interpret Apple’s battery claim as a maximum, not a promise
For eSIM-only versions, Apple estimates up to 36 hours of video playback for iPhone 18 Pro and up to 45 hours for iPhone 18 Pro Max. These are Apple’s maximum playback estimates, not independent real-world battery tests or a guarantee of everyday runtime. Usage, network conditions, settings, and regional model variant can affect battery life. Apple also claims the redesigned vapor chamber in iPhone 18 Pro enables up to a 40 percent sustained-performance gain over the previous generation; that figure is Apple’s claim about sustained performance, not a general speed comparison. Apple’s announcement gives the qualifications for these figures.

Compare prices in your market and confirm SIM compatibility
The Associated Press reported US launch starting prices of $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a reported US launch starting price of $1,999 for iPhone Duo. These are dated launch figures, not current transaction prices or prices that apply in every country. The final amount depends on the market, storage, carrier offer, and retailer; check current local listings before choosing. The Associated Press report provides the launch-price context.
SIM configuration also varies by region. Apple says eSIM-only models are sold in some countries and territories, while other regional versions have a physical SIM tray. Before a cross-border purchase—or if you need a physical SIM—verify the exact country model and make sure your carrier supports its SIM configuration. Apple’s technical specifications include regional SIM information.

Make the final choice around your real priorities
- Choose the standard iPhone if you want a balanced everyday phone and do not need the Pro camera system.
- Choose a Plus only if you find a model that fits your budget and preferences; it is not a new-generation option in Apple’s current listed lineup.
- Choose iPhone 18 Pro if its camera reach and manual controls are valuable to you in a smaller traditional Pro body.
- Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want the largest traditional iPhone display and are comfortable carrying its larger body.
- Consider iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, or iPhone Duo if lower entry cost, a thin-and-light design, or a foldable display is more important than the traditional tier labels.
There is no universally best choice: the right model depends on what it costs in your market, how it feels in your hand, how much camera control you need, and which regional configuration you can use.
