If it is available but the download or installation fails, retry on a reliable connection, make room if prompted, and then try Samsung Smart Switch on a computer. If the phone no longer boots normally after a failed update, contact Samsung service before attempting recovery that could erase data.
First, tell an unavailable update from a failed one
If no update appears in Settings, that does not necessarily mean the phone has a fault. Availability can depend on the exact model, original carrier, region, SIM status and rollout timing. Carriers may release updates at different times, and Samsung says updates can be distributed in waves. Check the original carrier’s update information for your model, connect to Wi-Fi if required, and check again later if the release is recent. A SIM-unlocked phone originally sold for a carrier may still need that carrier’s SIM to receive its update. Samsung’s update troubleshooting guide explains these availability factors.
To identify the software currently installed, open Settings > About phone (or About tablet) > Software information. Samsung’s US guidance identifies the Baseband version as the software version currently running. Menu names and update paths can vary by model, software version and carrier.
If the download or installation fails
- Reconnect and retry: Use a reliable network; some carriers require Wi-Fi. If the download stopped before completion, Samsung says you can resume it from the update notification.
- Free storage if prompted: Remove or move files and apps until the phone has the space it requests. Samsung does not specify one universal storage threshold for all Galaxy updates.
- Allow the update to finish: During installation, the phone may be unusable, files may be inaccessible, and calls—including emergency calls—may not be possible. Do not interrupt an installation in progress. See Samsung’s software-update instructions.
Try updating with Samsung Smart Switch
Smart Switch is Samsung’s official computer-based alternative when repeated phone-based downloads fail. It can install an update only if it offers one for the connected phone; it does not bypass carrier or model availability. You need a Windows PC or Mac and a USB cable compatible with both the Galaxy device and computer.

- Install or open Samsung Smart Switch on the computer.
- Connect the Galaxy phone using USB and follow any on-screen prompts, including selecting file-transfer mode if requested.
- If Smart Switch displays Update, select it and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the update completes. Samsung Support says: “Don’t disconnect the USB cable or use your device until the update is complete.” The phone will reboot during the process. See Samsung’s Smart Switch update instructions.
If Smart Switch fails, Samsung recommends checking for computer updates, restarting the computer, reinstalling Smart Switch, trying another USB port or cable, or using another computer. If a cable is damaged or unreliable, use a compatible replacement and verify the connector at both ends; no single cable specification fits every Galaxy phone and computer.
If the phone will not boot after the failed update
Back up important data before attempting emergency recovery or a factory data reset. Samsung warns that recovery may include a factory reset and that device data can be lost. If the phone fails to boot normally after the update failure, Samsung says service is required to reflash the device. Contact Samsung service rather than treating a reset as a routine next step. Which update route should you use?

Samsung’s India guidance recommends at least 20% battery charge for the update instructions described there.
