LibreOffice can open and save common Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files. To share reliably, keep a source copy, save an exchange copy in the format your recipients use, and check important files in their version of Microsoft Office. The more complex the layout or features, the more carefully you should validate the result.
Open Office files in the matching LibreOffice app
LibreOffice maps Microsoft Office file types to its corresponding applications: Word documents open in Writer, Excel workbooks in Calc, and PowerPoint presentations in Impress. Its documented formats include DOC and DOCX, XLS and XLSX, and PPT, PPS, and PPTX.
- Word: Open DOC or DOCX files in Writer.
- Excel: Open XLS or XLSX files in Calc.
- PowerPoint: Open PPT, PPS, or PPTX files in Impress.

Save in the format your recipients need
Choose an Office format for a single file
In the LibreOffice app, select File > Save As, then choose the relevant Microsoft Office file type—for example, DOCX for a Word document, XLSX for a spreadsheet, or PPTX for a presentation. This creates an Office-format exchange file without requiring you to make that format the default for every document.

Set an Office format for recurring sharing
If you routinely exchange documents with Office users, set the appropriate Microsoft Office format as the default save format. In the options, go to Load/Save > General, then choose the desired format for the relevant document type. The route is LibreOffice > Preferences on macOS or Tools > Options on many other systems. Menu wording can vary by operating system and LibreOffice release; consult LibreOffice’s format and options guidance if the labels differ.
Changing the default affects future saves; it does not convert files you have already saved. You can still choose a different format for an individual document with Save As.

Keep a working copy and validate important exports
- Retain the original. Keep the Office file unchanged when it is your source of truth, especially before editing a complex document.
- Save a working copy. For a LibreOffice-centered workflow, an OpenDocument Format (ODF) copy can serve as the editable master. Keep an Office-format version for recipients who need to continue editing in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
- Reopen the exported file in the recipient’s Office app. Check the pages, slides, tables, formulas, and other features that matter to the document’s purpose. This is a practical safeguard, not a formal validation procedure specified by LibreOffice.
LibreOffice’s Document Converter Wizard can batch-convert a folder of Office files to OpenDocument formats. Batch conversion can save time, but it does not establish that every document’s layout or behavior survived unchanged. See the LibreOffice guide to importing, exporting, and converting documents.
Check features that are more exposed to conversion differences
LibreOffice identifies feature-level differences that may need review. These are risk areas, not a claim that every file using them will fail. The official help cautions: “The amount of reformatting that can be expected is proportional to the complexity of the structure and formatting of the source document.”

For instance, a document can open successfully yet still need attention to a table’s layout or a presentation’s spacing. Focus review on the elements whose appearance or behavior would change how someone reads, edits, calculates, or presents the file. LibreOffice’s format compatibility help describes these areas.
Treat macros as a separate migration
Office and LibreOffice use different macro environments. Microsoft Office uses VBA; LibreOffice uses Basic code built around a different API. LibreOffice says the two cannot run the same macro code except in a few cases. Some Excel VBA scripts may run when the VBA feature is enabled, but scripts that rely on Office-specific objects or methods may require changes.

If a workflow depends on macros, keep using the original Office environment until you have verified that the required tasks still work. Also review LibreOffice’s options for retaining or deleting VBA macros when loading or saving Office documents. See LibreOffice’s macro and compatibility guidance.
Choose ODF, Office format, or PDF by the job
- Use ODF for an editable working copy in a LibreOffice-centered workflow. If sharing with software that supports an older ODF version, check the version setting: the Writer 26.2 guide notes that ODF version selection can matter for compatibility with older editors.
- Use DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX when the recipient needs an Office-format file or your continuing collaboration expects those formats.
- Add PDF when appropriate if a recipient needs to read a visually or operationally fixed document rather than edit it. LibreOffice can export to PDF, but a PDF does not replace an editable Office file when the recipient needs to continue editing. See LibreOffice’s document export guidance.
Decide how much checking a file needs
There is no quantitative compatibility score in LibreOffice’s published guidance, so judge each file by what it contains and what a failure would cost. A short, simply formatted document is a different exchange risk from a complex workbook with formulas and controls or a presentation with grouped objects and media.

- Complexity: More intricate structure and formatting can mean more reformatting to review.
- Required editing format: Confirm whether the recipient needs an editable Office file, an ODF master, or only a PDF for reading.
- Macros and embedded objects: Identify these before switching the workflow; they can involve behavior beyond ordinary text and layout.
- Cost of an error: The more consequential a changed layout, calculation, or presentation effect would be, the more thoroughly to test the exported copy in the target Office application.
LibreOffice’s documentation establishes that it supports the common Office formats and identifies areas where differences may arise, but it does not publish an overall conversion success rate. Compatibility should therefore be assessed on the files and features your work actually depends on.
