For a large work or school OneDrive collection, Microsoft recommends syncing the authorized account with the OneDrive sync app and moving the files locally. Neither basic route should be assumed to preserve Microsoft sharing permissions, links, version history, or metadata.
Choose what you are migrating
A download-and-upload transfer moves file contents and folders; it does not by itself establish that the Microsoft collaboration setup will be recreated in Nextcloud. Before choosing a method, decide whether the project requires only current files or also permissions, sharing links, version history, authorship, timestamps, or other metadata. The Microsoft and Nextcloud documentation for these basic transfer routes does not establish preservation of those Microsoft-specific properties. If they matter, test the selected tooling with representative content and verify the results before transferring everything.
Inventory the OneDrive accounts and SharePoint document libraries in scope. Estimate the data volume and item count, note shared folders, and check that you have permission to read every item. Include protected files, OneNote notebooks, unusual names, and deeply nested paths in the inventory. Microsoft’s OneDrive and SharePoint restrictions and limitations page is a useful preflight reference, not a guarantee that every item will work with a particular Nextcloud server.
Choose a transfer method

Browser download and upload
In OneDrive or SharePoint on the web, select the files or folders and choose the download action. Microsoft says downloads containing multiple items or folders arrive as a ZIP archive. Extract the archive locally, then upload the files or folders in Nextcloud’s Files interface. Nextcloud notes that an administrator can disable upload features, so check that uploads are enabled on the destination server. OneDrive sync for many items
For moving many items or working across multiple folders in another person’s work or school OneDrive, Microsoft recommends syncing the authorized OneDrive with its sync app and moving the files locally. Confirm that you have the right permissions for the exact account and library, wait for synchronization to complete, and review sync errors before treating the local copy as complete. The recommendation is documented for that shared OneDrive scenario; confirm its applicability to your source.
Custom automation with Graph and WebDAV
Microsoft Graph’s driveItem content endpoint returns a redirect to a preauthenticated URL for downloading a file’s primary content. Nextcloud’s WebDAV API documents uploading file content with PUT and creating folders with MKCOL, as well as listing and downloading files and folders. An automated workflow must still handle source and destination authentication, item enumeration, throttling, retries, naming conflicts, and validation. The documented endpoints do not constitute an end-to-end Microsoft-to-Nextcloud migration service.

Check browser-download limits and exceptions
The following figures are for Microsoft’s documented browser-download behavior, not general limits for OneDrive sync, Microsoft Graph, or every client. Microsoft Support’s page was updated in 2026; check it again before execution because service behavior can change.

Microsoft states, “You can’t download OneNote notebooks.” Treat notebooks as a separate workstream and verify a supported export or conversion route; the sources cited here do not establish a Nextcloud import method for them. For protected files that may be omitted from an archive, identify them during preflight and arrange separate handling.

Prepare names, paths, and staging space
Review Microsoft’s restrictions on file and folder names, file types, and sync before transferring. A file that downloads successfully may still fail to upload because of a name or path issue. If a controlled rename is necessary, keep an original-to-new-name mapping and check that changes will not create collisions.
Make sure the computer has enough local space for downloaded or synced content, and for extracted ZIP files where applicable. A staging drive can be useful for a large collection, but it is not required for every migration.

Upload and validate the destination
- Choose the destination. Sign in to the intended Nextcloud account and identify the target folder or shared folder before uploading.
- Upload the staged content. Use Nextcloud Files to upload individual files or entire folders, if enabled. For a custom WebDAV workflow, create destination folders with MKCOL and upload file content with PUT, handling errors rather than assuming each request succeeded.
- Compare inventories. Compare source and destination item counts, folder structure, and file sizes. Review failed or skipped downloads and uploads, renamed items, and duplicates or conflicts.
- Open representative files. Check a selection of files from different folders and formats in the destination. Confirm any special requirements—such as access settings or historical versions—directly with the chosen tool and project workflow.
- Keep the source available. Do not remove the Microsoft source until stakeholders have signed off on the destination and any required metadata or access model has been checked.
Do not confuse file migration with Groupware migration
Nextcloud’s User Migration App is documented for moving Groupware data between Nextcloud instances, not for importing files from Microsoft OneDrive or SharePoint. Nextcloud’s documentation says, “The User Migration App lets you move your Nextcloud Groupware data between instances.” It should not be treated as a Microsoft cloud-file importer.
