To install an available update, open Settings on your Galaxy phone or tablet, find Software update or System updates, and follow the on-screen prompts. Before you begin, plan for the period when the device will be unavailable, and back up important data before attempting any factory reset. Menu labels and update availability vary by model, software version, carrier, and region.
Before you start: plan for the interruption
During installation, your files are inaccessible and you cannot use the device to make calls, including emergency calls. Samsung advises planning around that interruption; do not start when you may need the phone. Samsung does not specify a universal minimum battery percentage for a system update, so follow any battery or charging prompt shown on your device rather than relying on a general threshold. Samsung’s update instructions explain the restriction.
Samsung says update changes can vary by model, country, and service provider. Review the details shown on your device before proceeding. You may need more than one update cycle to reach the latest version offered to your Galaxy.
Install the update from your Galaxy
- Open the update settings. Open Settings, then tap Software update or System updates. The wording can differ by model and carrier.
- Check for an available update. Tap Download and install, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates, depending on the options shown.
- Download and install. If an update is offered, download it if prompted, then follow the device’s on-screen instructions. Keep in mind that the phone will be unavailable while installation runs.
- Wait for the device to finish. Let the installation and any restart complete before relying on the phone again.
Some carriers require Wi-Fi to check for or install updates. If your device says Wi-Fi is required, connect to a Wi-Fi network and try again. Samsung’s update instructions cover the available Settings labels and prompts.

Use Smart Switch on a computer instead
Samsung Smart Switch is an alternative when it offers an update for your device. This route requires a Windows PC or Mac and a USB data connection; it is not necessary for the Settings-based update over Wi-Fi.
- Install and open Samsung Smart Switch on a Windows PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy to the computer, preferably with the USB cable supplied with the phone.
- Allow Smart Switch to detect the device. If the app offers Update, select it and follow the prompts.
- Do not disconnect the cable or use the device until installation finishes. The phone may reboot during the process.
If Smart Switch does not detect the phone or the connection fails, Samsung suggests trying another USB cable as part of troubleshooting. See Samsung’s software-update troubleshooting steps.

If no update appears or the installation fails
- No update is listed: Carriers develop and release updates, and distribution may happen in waves. Check release information with the original carrier; after a release, Samsung suggests checking again every few hours.
- Wi-Fi or SIM is required: Connect to Wi-Fi if your carrier requires it. On some SIM-unlocked phones originally sold for a specific carrier, Samsung says a SIM from that original carrier may be needed to download updates.
- Not enough storage: Free the amount of space specified by the device and retry. If the download was incomplete, Samsung says it may be possible to resume it from the notification. Smart Switch may help if downloads repeatedly fail.
- The device cannot operate normally after an interrupted update: Samsung describes a factory data reset as emergency recovery. A reset can erase device data, so back up important information first if possible. If the phone still cannot boot normally after a failed update, Samsung says it requires service to reflash the software.

A routine software update and a factory reset are different actions. Samsung warns that a reset can erase device data, so treat it as a recovery measure rather than a normal update step. Smart Switch can back up a Galaxy to a Windows PC or Mac, or to supported external storage such as a microSD card or USB storage device; available options vary by phone.

- For a computer backup, check that the PC or Mac has enough free space.
- Connect the phone, allow access when prompted, and open Smart Switch.
- Select Backup, choose the categories to save, and wait for the backup to finish.
- Safely eject or disconnect the device when the process is complete.
