In the NES version of Lee Trevino’s Fighting Golf, a shot uses three timed presses of A: start the backswing, set the swing at its top, then strike the ball. Use the D-pad to choose a high or low shot and B to select a club. The game offers Stroke Play, Nassau Game, and Practice on either an American or Japanese 18-hole course.
This guide covers the 1988 NES game. SNK also released an arcade version, whose controls are separate and should not be assumed to match the NES controller.
NES controls and the three-part swing
The NES manual identifies the D-pad, Select, Start, B, and A on the controller. The core shot sequence is built around A; the other actions help you adjust the shot.
- Press A to begin the backswing.
- Press A again at the top of the swing.
- Press A a third time at impact.
- D-pad up or down: Choose a high or low shot.
- B: Open club selection.
- Backspin: The game description says a quick A press with left or right immediately after contact applies backspin.
Timing alone does not determine a fixed distance. The selected club, golfer, lie, and course conditions also affect the result. The manual’s on-screen information includes wind, distance to the pin, ball status, hole layout, stroke count, and club and yard information.

Choose a mode and understand its scoring
| Mode | How it works |

| Stroke Play | Play 18 holes. The player with the lowest total strokes wins. |
| Nassau Game | A points-based contest between players. The available description notes that presses are allowed but does not explain the complete press rule. |
| Practice | A single player practices a selected hole, without playing a full round. |
Practice is a useful place to get used to the swing sequence or work through a challenging hole. Stroke Play is the straightforward choice for a full-round total. The available instructions do not establish every scoring-screen detail or tie-breaker.
Courses, lies, and hazards
The NES game has two courses, each with 18 holes: an American course and a Japanese course. The listed terrain and hazards include tee, fairway, green, out-of-bounds, water, light and hard sand, and super, light, heavy, and deep rough.

Pay attention to the ball’s lie and the course information before choosing a club or shot height. A shot from sand or rough is not the same situation as one from the fairway, and wind and distance-to-pin information are shown on screen.

Quick first-round plan
- Choose a mode: Practice to work on one hole, or Stroke Play for a full 18-hole round.
- Select a golfer whose strengths fit your preference: Super Mex for balance, Amy or Chosuke for control-oriented play, or Jumbo for distance.
- Check the on-screen wind, pin distance, ball status, and hole layout.
- Choose a club with B, set a high or low shot with the D-pad, then use the three A presses to swing.
- Adjust your approach to the ball’s lie and hazards rather than expecting timing alone to set the shot’s distance.
