If music starts when you connect your phone to your car even though Android Auto’s startup autoplay is off, Google says a fix is rolling out. Google’s Android community representative said the fix was fully rolled out to the latest Android Auto beta, while the stable rollout was still in progress as of October 2, 2026. That means it may not have reached every stable user yet.
What the Android Auto fix changes
Google says Android Auto is fixing a startup issue in which it sends an unsolicited play command when the phone connects to the car, despite the Android Auto startup autoplay setting being turned off. The goal is to stop media from beginning automatically during that connection.
In an October 2, 2026 community post, a Google Android community representative also described changes intended to avoid selecting media apps a user has not recently or ever used, and a possible one-tap notification offering to turn autoplay off when someone frequently pauses playback. The post does not give a version-by-version schedule or say when the stable rollout will finish.
Beta and stable rollout status
In a reply about music autoplay, the Google representative said the startup fix was fully rolled out to users on the latest Android Auto beta release and was still rolling out to stable users. Google did not provide a universal stable arrival date, so the channel status does not establish whether a particular phone, car, or app has received the change.

If the fix has not reached your stable installation, music may still start even with Android Auto startup autoplay turned off. Google describes the correction as a software rollout; the available information does not support changing cables, adapters, speakers, or other hardware as a remedy.
Android Auto autoplay is different from app autoplay
Google uses “autoplay” in its post to mean Android Auto starting media when the phone connects to the car. That is separate from a music service’s own autoplay feature, such as continuing with similar songs after an album or playlist ends. Changing an app’s queue or autoplay setting may affect what happens after playback begins, but it is not the same control as Android Auto’s startup autoplay.

Google’s Android Auto media guide explains that compatible apps can play music and podcasts through the car’s speakers. It does not provide a specific end-user troubleshooting procedure for this startup bug. Android’s developer guidance on playback control says apps should not start music automatically just because Android Auto or Android Automotive OS connects to their media browser service; playback should follow the car’s state or a user action. That is intended app behavior, not a guarantee that every app and vehicle configuration behaves identically.

- Check Android Auto’s startup autoplay setting separately from the autoplay, queue, or continuation setting inside your music app.
- If Android Auto startup autoplay is off and music still begins as soon as the car connects, the behavior matches the issue Google says it is fixing.
- If you use the stable release, allow for the ongoing rollout; Google has not stated when the fix will reach every stable installation.
Google has acknowledged the issue and says the fix is rolling out, but it has not published a complete list of affected phone, vehicle, or app combinations. The separate official help and developer pages explain media playback generally and intended app behavior; neither promises a workaround that will resolve this bug before the update arrives.
