Depending on the material and its starting state, heating may trigger crystal formation in glass, change grain-boundary structure or chemistry, redistribute defects, relax strain, or instead promote grain growth. The resulting electrical or other functional properties depend on composition, atmosphere, and the full time–temperature schedule.
What heat treatment changes at the nanoscale
Heating gives atoms, ions, and defects greater opportunity to move during a treatment. The changes that follow depend on the ceramic’s composition and initial structure. Heat may alter point-defect populations or mobility, change grain boundaries, relax internal strain, trigger a phase transition, or encourage grains to grow. These processes can occur together, and not every one creates finer grains.
Three starting conditions help explain why reported treatments differ: a crystalline ceramic with boundaries and defects already present; an amorphous precursor such as glass that can crystallize; or a previously made nanostructured material, such as a deposited film, that is annealed afterward.
How grain-boundary changes affect a ceramic
Grain boundaries are interfaces between neighboring crystals. They can undergo phase-like changes called complexion transitions: their structure, composition, and properties may change discontinuously as temperature, bulk composition, or other conditions vary. These transitions can affect properties measured across the whole ceramic, but the effect may be beneficial or detrimental; a transition is not automatically a route to better performance or smaller grains. Annual Reviews’ 2020 review of grain-boundary complexion transitions describes this interface-scale mechanism.

How glass becomes a glass-ceramic
For glass-ceramics, heat treatment can drive a more explicit sequence. Reheating near or slightly above the glass-transition temperature can promote nucleation—the formation of small crystal nuclei within the glass. A later, often hotter annealing step promotes crystal growth. The size and shape of the crystals, and the resulting properties, depend on composition, crystal structure, and the time–temperature schedule. Even relatively small changes in components can affect crystallization, so a schedule for one glass composition should not be treated as a general recipe. A 2025 review of glass-ceramic engineering discusses these processing relationships.
How annealing can change an existing nanocrystalline film
Annealing does not always create nanostructure from scratch. In powder-aerosol-deposited (PAD) functional ceramic films, deposition can produce dense, adherent films at room temperature. Their nanocrystalline structure and internal strain may impair electrical properties; post-deposition annealing is used in some cases to recover more bulk-like functional behavior. The response depends on the material, so this example does not establish that annealing improves every ceramic film. A 2020 survey of PAD functional ceramic films reviews this approach.

Why defect chemistry and processing conditions matter
Point defects—such as missing or misplaced ions—can influence how ions move and how ceramic surfaces and interfaces behave. Temperature is one part of that picture, but external electric fields can also affect defect equilibria, ion mobility, surface gas exchange, grain growth, and phase transitions. Those field-driven effects should not be attributed to an ordinary furnace anneal: a review of external stimuli in functional ceramics treats electric fields, field-assisted sintering, and emerging stimuli such as UV light, microwaves, and magnetic fields as distinct processing influences. The 2026 review by Mascotto and Biesuz surveys these mechanisms.
For any reported heat treatment, the useful comparison is not just the peak temperature. Check the material and composition, starting state, atmosphere, any applied field, hold and cooling schedule, the nanoscale feature measured, how it was characterized, and which functional property was tested. Without those details, a result from one ceramic cannot establish a transferable process for another.

Heat treatment is not the same as every nanostructuring route
High-pressure torsion is a severe-plastic-deformation technique reviewed as a way to refine grains in several ceramics. It is a distinct route from heating, and reported refinement under that process is not evidence that heat treatment created the grains. The mechanisms of refinement in ceramics under high-pressure torsion are also not fully clear. A 2025 review of high-pressure torsion in ceramics covers this separate approach.
