What is the “fatal flaw” claim?
In the 2024 article, writer Jarrod Saunders quoted a Console Service Centre statement dated January 2, 2023, that said: “Don’t stand your PS5 upright on its stand. Let it lay flat.” The repair centre claimed that when a vertical console gets hot, liquid metal can move away from the processor, eventually causing overheating. Fortress of Solitude’s report presents this as the repair centre’s warning; it does not establish it as a verified technical finding.
The date matters: the warning was made in 2023, even though the article carrying it appeared in November 2024. Its headline can make the claim seem like a newly discovered flaw, but the article does not offer independent testing or a Sony confirmation that upright placement creates a general defect.
Is it bad to stand a PS5 upright?
The available information does not establish that ordinary vertical placement causes PS5 overheating or liquid-metal failure. The same Fortress of Solitude article says the console is built for either orientation. That conflicts with treating the repair centre’s recommendation to lay it flat as a universal manufacturer instruction.

The repair centre said it had performed more than 50 PS5 repairs in 2022. That is a business-reported repair count, not a count of confirmed orientation-related failures. The report provides no denominator, failure breakdown, or independently described method, so the number cannot show how common such a problem is or prove that vertical placement caused it.
What can PS5 owners reasonably do?
Use a stable placement that suits your space and does not obstruct the console’s ventilation. The report discusses confined placement and blocked cooling paths as concerns, but those comments are not a Sony statement or proof that horizontal placement prevents failure. The available material does not resolve whether the liquid-metal claim applies to a particular PS5 model, repair condition, or failure mode.

- If you use it vertically, make sure it is stable and that airflow is not blocked.
