When bond yields rise, prices of existing fixed-rate bonds generally fall. That does not automatically mean you should sell: the right response depends on what you own, when you need the money, and whether your portfolio still matches your goals and risk tolerance. Start by reviewing your holdings and plan—not by making an all-or-nothing move based on a rate forecast.

Why rising yields can lower bond prices

Bond prices and yields generally move in opposite directions. When market rates rise, newly issued bonds can offer more attractive returns, so existing fixed-rate bonds with lower coupons become less appealing unless their market prices fall. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy states, “When market interest rates rise, prices of fixed-rate bonds fall.” SEC Investor Bulletin: Fixed Income Investments — When Interest Rates Go Up, Prices of Fixed-Rate Bonds Fall.

How much a particular bond’s price moves depends on its terms and market conditions. In general, longer-maturity bonds and bonds with lower coupons are more sensitive to rate changes than otherwise comparable bonds. Duration is a measure investors use to estimate a bond’s sensitivity to interest-rate changes; it is not a guarantee of the price movement.

The SEC bulletin illustrates the effect with a hypothetical 10-year Treasury bond with a 3% coupon and $1,000 face value. In its example, after one year, a rise in the market rate from 3% to 4% puts the bond’s price at $925. This is an educational illustration, not an observed market result or forecast.

First identify what you own and when you need the money

An individual bond and a bond fund do not give you the same way to respond to a price decline. Before changing anything, check the holdings, the role they play in your allocation, and whether you may need to sell before the investment’s maturity or your planned withdrawal date.

  • Individual bonds: If you hold an individual bond to maturity, you may receive its face value, provided the issuer meets its obligations. Selling before maturity means accepting the prevailing market price, which may be below what you paid. A government guarantee of a bond’s payments does not guarantee its resale price.
  • Bond funds: A bond fund does not have a single maturity date at which an investor can simply wait for the fund’s holdings to repay face value. Fund value and income depend on its holdings and management, so assess its duration, credit exposure, and place in your plan rather than treating it like one bond held to maturity.
  • Both: Review maturity and duration, credit quality, cash-flow timing, liquidity, tax treatment, and whether you expect to hold to maturity or sell earlier. These factors can matter as much as the direction of yields.

Decide whether your plan calls for a change

  1. Check your time horizon and liquidity needs. Identify when you expect to spend the money and whether you could need to sell holdings early. A near-term withdrawal makes price fluctuations and access to cash especially relevant.
  2. Compare your current allocation with your target. Consider whether bond and stock weights have drifted, and whether your goals, circumstances, or ability to tolerate losses have changed.
  3. Make changes to restore the plan, if needed. Rebalancing can bring an allocation back toward its intended weights. It is different from shifting the whole portfolio because you expect rates to move a particular way.
  4. Consider the portfolio as a whole. Bonds may contribute income and diversification, but diversification does not guarantee profit or prevent losses. The effect of higher rates on stocks and bonds can differ with economic conditions.

Vanguard’s April 7, 2025 article, How to navigate rising interest rates, cautions against hasty major changes when circumstances have not materially changed. It also describes rising rates as an indicator of the economy’s current state, rather than inherently good or bad. A rate forecast alone is not a complete reason to abandon a long-term allocation.

What the main bond approaches trade off

Approach Potential role Trade-offs to consider
Shorter-duration or shorter-maturity bonds Generally less price-sensitive to rate changes than otherwise similar longer bonds. They still carry credit, inflation, and reinvestment risk. Shorter exposure does not remove bond-market risk.
Bond ladder Staggers individual bond maturities, creating recurring opportunities to reinvest proceeds at rates then available. It does not guarantee returns or protect longer-dated bonds from price losses if sold early. Callable bonds can be redeemed early, changing expected cash flows.
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) Principal is adjusted based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI); TIPS pay interest every six months. They may be relevant when inflation-linked purchasing power is a concern. TIPS are marketable securities, not a guarantee against all losses. Their value can fluctuate, and investors should consider liquidity, tax treatment, and other terms. Investor.gov says TIPS are issued in 5-, 10-, and 30-year maturities; its Bonds FAQs page does not state a publication date.

A ladder’s mechanics and callable-bond considerations are explained in Vanguard’s Bond trading strategies: Ladders, barbells, & swaps. None of these approaches is best for every investor; compare cash-flow timing, credit quality, duration, inflation exposure, taxes, and liquidity against your own needs.

Keep inflation, credit, and reinvestment risks in view

Higher yields can improve the income available on new investments or on principal reinvested when a bond matures. But the rate available at a future maturity is unknown, and an investor who sells early may receive less than the bond’s face value. A ladder spreads reinvestment dates; it does not ensure that future rates will be higher.

Rate risk is only one part of bond risk. Ordinary nominal bonds can lose purchasing power when inflation rises. TIPS adjust principal based on CPI, but their market prices can still move. Bonds also differ in issuer creditworthiness and liquidity, and their tax treatment and other terms vary. Vanguard’s overview of investing in individual stocks and bonds discusses factors to consider when selecting individual securities.
