In Survival mode, build a small, fully enclosed shelter before spending time on decoration. Gather wood for planks and a crafting table, close the walls and roof with available blocks, then add a door and light. A bed and furnace make the house more useful when you have the materials. Creative mode removes the resource-gathering constraint, but the same layout principles still work.

What you need for a first Minecraft house

There is no required blueprint or fixed block count: the amount of material depends on the footprint, wall height, roof, and any openings you choose. For a first Survival build, prioritize the blocks needed to make a sealed room over windows and decorative details.

  • Wood: Gather it from trees and turn it into planks. Minecraft’s official crafting guide says one wood block makes four planks, and four planks make a crafting table. Minecraft’s crafting guide
  • Wall and roof blocks: Dirt or cobblestone can work for a basic enclosure; Minecraft’s first-night guide names both as examples. Use what you can gather rather than delaying shelter for a preferred building material. Minecraft’s first-night guide
  • Door: A wooden door provides a convenient entrance closure. Minecraft’s first-day instructions show crafting and placing one on a shelter. Minecraft’s first-day guide
  • Light: Torches can be crafted using wood or sticks and coal. Place light inside to reduce dark areas where hostile mobs can spawn. Minecraft’s first-night guide
  • Bed, if available: It takes three wool blocks of the same color and three planks of one wood type; any wood type works. A bed lets you sleep and set a respawn point. Minecraft’s guide to spawning and dying
  • Furnace, if available: Craft one at a crafting table with eight cobblestone. It can smelt materials and prepare food. Minecraft’s first-night guide

Choose a simple layout

A compact, ground-level rectangle is a practical first choice: it is easy to enclose with common blocks and can fit a door, bed, crafting table, and furnace. This is a flexible recommendation, not an official blueprint. Choose a reasonably level spot near resources you are already collecting, and leave enough room inside to move around your furnishings.

Plan the entrance before building the walls. Leave one opening for the door, then close every other gap and the roof. The priority is a complete enclosure; add windows or decorative shapes later. Minecraft’s official beginner guide puts the principle plainly: “Build your shelter, making sure there’s no way for monsters to get in!” Minecraft’s “How to Minecraft” guide

Build the shelter step by step

  1. Gather wood first. Collect wood from nearby trees. If night is close, do not spend time decorating or searching for ideal materials; use dirt or cobblestone to close off a basic refuge.
  2. Make planks and a crafting table. Open your inventory crafting grid, convert a wood block into four planks, then use four planks to make a crafting table. Place the table so you can use its larger crafting grid. Minecraft’s crafting guide
  3. Mark a modest footprint. Pick a practical, reasonably level location and outline a small rectangle that leaves space for the door and basic furnishings. Adjust it to your available materials; no particular dimensions are required.
  4. Raise solid walls and leave one entrance. Build with available blocks such as dirt or cobblestone. Avoid leaving gaps that mobs could pass through.
  5. Close the roof. Finish the enclosure before adding windows or decorative features. A dug refuge or makeshift block shelter is also reasonable when speed matters more than appearance.
  6. Add a door and light. Craft and place a wooden door if you have the materials. Put torches inside so the room is not left dark; expand the lighting around the shelter as supplies allow. First-day guide · First-night guide
  7. Fit out the room when resources allow. Add a bed using three same-color wool and three same-type planks, and a furnace using eight cobblestone. If you do not have wool or enough cobblestone yet, the enclosure can still serve as your first shelter.
  8. Expand or decorate after it works. Add storage, windows, or extra space once your shelter is enclosed and lit.

When to choose a different starter-base style

A plain cabin is generally the most straightforward option on ordinary terrain. More distinctive designs can be enjoyable, but they depend on location and may be less convenient to enclose or expand. Minecraft’s official Survival base examples include an underwater glass house, a mushroom house, and a jungle treehouse. Minecraft’s starter-base tutorial

Style Location and materials Practical trade-off
Ground-level cabin Ordinary terrain; use commonly gathered blocks. A simple shape is easy to enclose and light, making it a practical first-night choice.
Mushroom house Requires a suitable mushroom area. The official tutorial describes this option as small, which limits room for expansion.
Underwater glass house Requires a water setting and glass. It is more location- and material-dependent; the official tutorial notes that expanding it underwater can be tricky.
Jungle treehouse Requires access to a jungle and treetops or vines. It uses the setting for its design, so it is not a readily available option in every starting area.

Whichever style you choose, do not assume that an unusual design is safe simply because it looks enclosed. Check for openings and place light; protection depends on the actual shelter, not its theme.
